Chapter 8 - The Darkness

Sarah screamed, struggling violently against the heavy ropes binding her to the chair.

"Derek, please do not do this!" she cried out, her voice echoing with absolute heartbreak.

I looked directly into Derek's terrified eyes, refusing to flinch or beg for my life.

"Do what you have to do, recruit," I said evenly, accepting my fate if it meant Sarah survived.

Derek's finger rested heavily on the trigger, his breathing shallow and rapid.

Thorne smiled warmly, enjoying the twisted psychological torture he was inflicting on our family.

"Pull the trigger, boy, and become a man," Thorne coaxed gently.

Derek squeezed his eyes shut, letting out a primal, agonizing scream of sheer frustration.

He spun around and pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession.

He did not aim at me, and he did not aim at Thorne.

He fired directly into the main electrical breaker box mounted on the steel beam behind Thorne.

Sparks showered the concrete floor as the warehouse plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

"Kill them all!" Thorne roared in the darkness, his composed demeanor instantly shattering.

Muzzle flashes erupted across the warehouse as the guards fired wildly into the void.

I immediately dropped to the floor, rolling behind a stack of wooden shipping pallets.

My military training kicked into high gear, welcoming the chaos of the dark.

I crawled silently across the concrete, tracking the position of the nearest guard by his panicked breathing.

I swept his legs out from under him, disarming him of his rifle before he hit the ground.

"I have one of their weapons!" I shouted into the dark, racking the bolt loudly.

Derek used the distraction to sprint toward the center of the room.

I heard the distinct sound of a knife sawing desperately through thick nylon ropes.

"I got you, Sarah, I got you," Derek whispered frantically in the pitch black.

Suddenly, a massive beam of light cut through the warehouse as Thorne turned on a tactical flashlight.

He aimed the blinding beam directly at the center of the room.

Derek was standing directly in front of Sarah, shielding her pregnant body entirely with his own.

Thorne raised a heavy twelve-gauge shotgun, aiming it squarely at Derek's chest.

"You missed a spot, Derek," Thorne sneered viciously.

Thorne pulled the heavy trigger.
