Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

I stared at the black barrel of the pistol pointed squarely at my heart.

"Put the weapon down, son," I said calmly, keeping both hands firmly on the steering wheel.

Derek's hands were shaking so violently I thought the gun might discharge accidentally.

"If I hand you over to Thorne, maybe he will let me go," Derek reasoned, his voice cracking with desperation.

"Thorne does not leave witnesses, and he certainly does not forgive debts," I replied, refusing to show any fear.

"You are a dead man if you walk in there alone."

Derek hesitated, a single tear rolling down his cheek before he finally lowered the weapon.

"I am sorry," he whispered, placing the gun on the dashboard.

"Apologize to your wife," I muttered, driving through the rusted gates of the shipyard.

We pulled up to a massive, corrugated metal warehouse illuminated by harsh industrial spotlights.

Four armed guards stood at the entrance, carrying automatic rifles across their chests.

I grabbed the deed to the house from the glove compartment and stepped out into the freezing rain.

Derek followed closely behind me, looking like a dead man walking to the gallows.

The guards patted us down, confiscating my combat knife and Derek's pistol before leading us inside.

The warehouse was vast and smelled strongly of rust, salt water, and stale cigarettes.

Sitting on a wooden crate in the center of the room was Silas Thorne.

He was a sharp-featured man in a tailored suit, looking entirely out of place in the grim setting.

Behind him, tied to a metal chair, was Sarah.

Her face was bruised, but she looked up at me with fierce, unbroken relief.

"Master Sergeant Vance, you are right on time," Thorne smiled, standing up and buttoning his jacket.

"I brought the deed and the boy," I said, holding up the legal document.

"Let her go."

Thorne laughed, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the high metal ceiling.

"The house barely covers the interest on his debt," Thorne said coldly.

"I am afraid I still need a pound of flesh to balance the books."

Thorne nodded to his guards, who immediately aimed their rifles directly at me.

"Derek, pick up the pistol from the table," Thorne commanded, pointing to the gun they had just confiscated from us.

Derek slowly walked forward and picked up his own weapon.

"Shoot the old man, Derek, and you and your wife can walk away completely debt-free," Thorne offered.

Derek turned around, raising the gun and aiming it directly at my forehead for the second time tonight.
