Chapter 5 - The Extraction

I struck the man across the jaw, knocking him completely unconscious.
My mind raced with blinding fury as I sprinted out the front door and jumped into my truck.
Derek had actually traded his pregnant wife to a crime syndicate just to save his own miserable life.
I tore out of the driveway, completely ignoring the neighborhood speed limits.
The downtown plaza was fifteen minutes away, but I made the drive in eight.
I abandoned my truck on the curb, sprinting through the luxurious glass doors of the hotel lobby.
The night clerk yelled something at me, but I ignored him and ran straight for the emergency stairwell.
Sarah was on the fourth floor, and waiting for an elevator was a tactical error I could not afford.
I bounded up the concrete steps two at a time, my lungs burning with exertion.
I kicked the fourth-floor exit door open and stepped into the carpeted hallway.
It was dead silent.
I drew my combat knife and moved quietly toward room 412.
The heavy oak door was slightly ajar, the lock violently splintered near the frame.
"Sarah!" I yelled, pushing the door open with my shoulder.
The suite was completely empty.
The bedsheets were tangled on the floor, and a bedside lamp was shattered against the wall.
I stood in the center of the room, a sickening wave of failure washing over my entire body.
I had trained hundreds of soldiers to survive warzones, but I had failed to protect my own daughter.
Suddenly, the hotel room phone began to ring loudly.
I walked over to the nightstand and picked up the receiver with a trembling hand.
"Hello," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
"Master Sergeant Vance, I presume," a smooth, cultured voice replied over the line.
"Silas Thorne," I guessed correctly.
"Your daughter is perfectly safe for now, assuming you are willing to negotiate," Thorne said pleasantly.
"If you harm one single hair on her head, I will burn your entire empire to the ground," I promised.
Thorne chuckled softly, completely unfazed by my threat.
"Bring the deed to her house and her cowardly husband to the abandoned naval shipyards in exactly one hour," he instructed.
"If you involve the police, or if you show up without Derek, she dies."

The line went dead, leaving a hollow dial tone echoing in my ear.
I dropped the phone, realizing I had to find a man who was already running for his life in a city of millions.
