Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

The heavy padlock clicked loudly, echoing like a gunshot within the confines of the dark storage unit.
I quickly shoved the black binder into my oversized purse, gripping the strap with white-knuckled determination.
The metal door aggressively rolled up, instantly blinding me with the harsh glare of high-powered flashlights.
Three massive men in tactical gear stepped into the unit, their weapons aimed directly at my pregnant belly.
Elias stepped confidently out from behind his armed guards, wearing an impeccably tailored suit and a cruel, arrogant smile.
He dragged a badly beaten, practically unconscious Brian forward by his torn collar, throwing him onto the concrete floor.
"Hand over the binder, sweetheart, and I'll make sure your death is completely painless," Elias offered casually.
I stared fiercely into the cold, dead eyes of the half-brother I had never known.
"If you kill me, the entire empire legally collapses into federal probate court," I lied, keeping my voice surprisingly steady.
Elias laughed, pulling a sleek silver pistol from his shoulder holster and pointing it at Brian's head.
"I already own the local judges, and I definitely don't need this pathetic loser anymore," Elias sneered.
"I just need you out of the way before the baby is born and legally complicates my total ownership."
He raised the weapon toward me, his finger slowly tightening over the delicate metal trigger.
I braced myself for the blinding pain, instinctively turning my body to shield the child growing inside me.
Before Elias could fire a single shot, a deafening explosion shattered the silence of the storage facility.
The harsh glare of the flashlights vanished instantly as the armed guards were thrown violently backward to the floor.
Elias completely missed his shot, the bullet sparking dangerously against the concrete wall just inches from my head.
He stumbled backward, screaming in pain as he clutched a shattered, bleeding shoulder.
A massive, armored vehicle crashed directly through the facility's main gates, its bright headlights flooding the chaotic scene.
Dozens of heavily armed federal agents swarmed the storage unit, screaming aggressive orders for everyone to drop their weapons.
Leading the charge was Evelyn, the sharp-suited lawyer, completely shedding her refined demeanor as she aimed an assault rifle at Elias.
"I told you I was hired to protect her at all costs," Evelyn shouted over the deafening sirens.
Elias dropped his weapon in pure shock, falling to his knees as federal agents aggressively forced him completely onto the ground.
Brian looked up at me from the concrete floor, coughing up blood as he offered a pathetic, apologetic smile.

The nightmare was finally falling apart around them, but the intense adrenaline in my system suddenly shifted into agonizing pain.
I grabbed my stomach, crying out loudly as a massive, unmistakable contraction ripped completely through my lower back.
