Chapter 7 - The Master Key

The harsh beam of the flashlight completely blinded me through the thin wooden slats of the closet door.

I held my breath, clamping both hands tightly over my mouth to silence my ragged breathing.

The intruder took a slow, heavy step forward, the floorboards creaking violently beneath his immense weight.

Just as he reached out a gloved hand toward the closet handle, Brian tackled him fiercely from the hallway.

The two men crashed hard into the beautiful wooden crib I had spent three entire weekends painting.

I didn't wait to see who was winning the desperate, bloody struggle on the floor.

I pushed the closet doors open, sprinting awkwardly past them and completely out of the nursery.

I grabbed my purse from the kitchen counter and practically threw myself out the front door into the warm evening air.

I jumped into my rusty sedan, praying the unreliable engine would start on the very first try.

The engine sputtered once before roaring to life, and I slammed my foot furiously onto the gas pedal.

I sped out of the neighborhood, driving aimlessly through the darkened city streets for nearly an hour.

I finally pulled into an abandoned strip mall parking lot, completely exhausted and practically numb with fear.

I opened my purse to check the envelope of cash, desperately needing some form of reassurance.

As I pulled the money out, the small silver key I had found taped to the envelope slipped onto my lap.

I picked it up, holding the strangely shaped piece of metal up to the dim glow of a nearby streetlamp.

I suddenly realized this wasn't a key to a door or a bank vault like I had originally thought.

The thick metal head of the key had a faint, faded logo of a popular self-storage company stamped right into it.

Engraved beneath the logo were the numbers 408.

Mrs. Whitaker hadn't given me a random key; she had given me a literal map to her final secret.

I quickly searched the storage company's name on my phone, finding a massive facility located just two miles away.

I put the car in drive and raced toward the industrial edge of the city, my determination completely overpowering my fear.

I arrived at the sprawling complex, finding it entirely deserted under the flickering orange security lights.

I easily found unit 408 down a long, quiet corridor of heavy steel doors.

The silver key slid perfectly into the padlock, turning with a satisfying, heavy click.

I rolled the heavy metal door upward, coughing as a thick cloud of dust instantly hit my face.

I pulled out my phone's flashlight, expecting to find mountains of illegal cash or stolen weapons.

Instead, the large storage unit contained exactly one item sitting right in the center of the concrete floor.

It was a small, ornate wooden crib holding a terrifyingly realistic doll wrapped in a blood-stained blanket.

Suddenly, the heavy metal door behind me slammed violently down to the floor, plunging me into absolute darkness.
