Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

I froze entirely, the cold metal of my own kitchen knife pressing dangerously through my thin cotton shirt.
"Brian, what are you doing?" I choked out, a fresh wave of terrifying adrenaline flooding my veins.
He slowly lowered the blade, stepping around me to lock the heavy front door with a trembling hand.
In the dim light of the hallway, I could finally see how completely destroyed my ex-husband looked.
His clothes were torn, his face was heavily bruised, and his eyes were wild with paranoid exhaustion.
"They found me ten minutes after I called you," Brian stammered, pacing nervously across the living room rug.
"I managed to escape, but they are sweeping the entire city right now."
I backed away from him, absolutely refusing to trust the man who had secretly sold our unborn child to criminals.
"Why should I believe you?" I demanded, pointing an angry finger at his bruised face.
"Because I found out who actually killed Mrs. Whitaker," he said, pulling a folded piece of paper from his pocket.
He handed it to me, and I quickly unfolded the crisp, white document.
It was a bank transfer receipt showing two million dollars moving from the Whitaker estate into a shell company.
"Mrs. Whitaker didn't want to take the baby from you," Brian explained, dropping onto the sofa in defeat.
"She wanted to use the baby as a legal shield to protect the fortune from her late husband's ruthless business partner, Elias."
Brian revealed that Elias had orchestrated the foreclosure and the murder to gain total control of the empire.
"Elias framed you for the murder so you would go to prison, making it legally effortless for him to take custody of the child," Brian said.
The pieces of the horrifying puzzle finally snapped together perfectly in my mind.
I rushed to the kitchen counter, frantically searching behind the toaster for the manila envelope full of cash.
It was still perfectly hidden exactly where I had shoved it before the sheriff arrived that morning.
"We have to take this money and leave the state immediately," I declared, stuffing the heavy envelope into my purse.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the back of the house, near the laundry room door.
The sound of shattering glass meant someone had just violently kicked their way into my home.
Brian instantly grabbed the kitchen knife again, pointing it fiercely toward the dark hallway.
"Hide in the nursery," Brian whispered, his voice trembling but surprisingly resolute.
I waddled as fast as I could into the baby's room, sliding quietly into the dark closet and shutting the louvered doors.

Through the wooden slats, I watched a tall silhouette wearing a dark mask step silently into the nursery.
The intruder raised a heavy flashlight, the bright beam sweeping slowly across the very closet doors hiding me.
