Chapter 5 - The Escape Plan

The phone slipped completely out of my hand, shattering against the hard tile floor of the bank vault.

The two massive men stepped further into the cramped room, their expressions entirely devoid of emotion.

Evelyn instantly stepped in front of me, using her body as a physical shield to protect my pregnant belly.

"You have absolutely no legal jurisdiction here," Evelyn snapped, her voice ringing with stunning authority.

One of the men simply smiled, pulling a silenced pistol from beneath his tailored suit jacket.

"We aren't here for a legal debate, counselor," the armed man said smoothly.

Without warning, Evelyn grabbed the heavy metal safe deposit box from the table and swung it with incredible force.

The solid metal caught the armed man directly across the jaw, sending him crashing backward into his partner.

"Run!" Evelyn screamed, shoving me hard toward the open doorway.

I didn't hesitate for a single second, sprinting down the hallway as fast as my swollen ankles would allow.

I heard the terrifying, muffled thwip of a silenced gunshot hit the wall right behind my head.

I burst through the vault gate, screaming at the top of my lungs to create massive chaos in the main lobby.

Dozens of customers completely panicked, diving for the floor and blocking the aisles in their desperate scramble for safety.

I used the frightened crowd as cover, pushing through the heavy glass revolving doors and out into the blinding sunlight.

I didn't look back to see if Evelyn had survived, knowing I had to protect my baby at all costs.

I flagged down a passing taxi, throwing myself into the back seat and screaming at the driver to step on the gas.

We sped away just as the two men burst out of the bank doors, angrily scanning the busy street.

I gave the driver my home address, realizing it was the only place I still had the cash Mrs. Whitaker had left me.

I needed that money to disappear completely and start a new life far away from these monsters.

When the taxi pulled up to my curb, my heart instantly sank deep into my stomach.

The front door of my house was sitting wide open, and the lights were completely off inside.

I crept cautiously onto the porch, clutching my heavy purse tightly against my chest.

I stepped quietly into the silent hallway, holding my breath to listen for any signs of an intruder.

That was when I felt the cold, sharp tip of a kitchen knife press firmly against my lower back.

"Don't make a single sound," Brian's voice whispered directly into my ear.
