Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Exile

Hannah set her untouched dinner plate on the cold granite counter next to the stove.
Her fingers trembled slightly as they rose to trace the delicate gold compass pendant resting against her collarbone.
The joyous sounds of Christmas Eve drifted through the swinging door from the dining room.
She could hear her husband laughing warmly at a joke made by Thomas Whitaker.
She could hear Vanessa Cole’s soft, melodic voice chiming in, seamlessly playing the role of the gracious hostess.
For seven years, Hannah had cooked every meal, decorated every tree, and supported Ethan through every financial crisis.
Now, she was banished to the kitchen like a hired servant just so he could impress a wealthy client.
She stared out the small kitchen window into the dark, snowy night.
She realized with brutal clarity that her father had been right all along about Ethan's character.
Suddenly, the heavy brass knocker on the front door echoed through the house.
The laughter in the dining room abruptly stopped.
Diane Mercer complained loudly about who could possibly be bothering them on Christmas Eve.
Hannah heard Ethan push his chair back and walk down the hardwood hallway to open the door.
A deep, commanding voice immediately filled the entryway, carrying a weight that made the entire house feel small.
It was Jonathan Vale.
Ethan stuttered, completely starstruck and terrified to find the most powerful developer in the Carolinas standing on his porch.
Ethan frantically tried to welcome him, assuming the billionaire was here to discuss the Uptown development contract.
Jonathan completely ignored Ethan’s outstretched hand and walked straight past him into the dining room.
Thomas Whitaker leaped out of his chair so fast it tipped backward and crashed onto the floor.
Jonathan slowly swept his intimidating gaze across the lavishly decorated table.
His cold eyes locked onto Vanessa, who was sitting comfortably in the chair at the head of the table.
Jonathan turned his icy stare back to a trembling Ethan.
He demanded to know why his only daughter was not sitting at the table.
Ethan swallowed hard, nervously pointing toward the kitchen and claiming Hannah was not feeling well enough to join them.
Jonathan did not say another word as he pushed through the swinging door.
He looked at Hannah standing alone in the cramped kitchen with her cold plate of food.

He turned back to face the horrified guests in the dining room.
He loudly asked Ethan why the sole heir to the Vale billionaire empire was being forced to eat alone in the kitchen.
