Chapter 5 - The Basement Descent

I absolutely refused to stay behind in my room while my family was in danger.

Walter stubbornly pushed my wheelchair as we followed the FBI tactical team down the hall.

We piled into the large service elevator and descended into the restricted sub-basement levels.

The air down there was freezing cold and smelled strongly of rust and damp earth.

The heavily armed agents stacked up in a tactical formation outside the old boiler room door.

They kicked the heavy metal door open with a deafening crash and swept the room with their rifles.

I rolled my wheelchair forward desperately to look inside the dark space.

The room was completely empty except for a television screen playing a pre-recorded loop of the hostage video.

Ethan and Noah were absolutely nowhere to be seen.

A cheap burner phone resting on a folding table suddenly began to ring loudly.

The lead agent answered the phone carefully and put the device on speakerphone.

Diane's voice echoed through the dark, empty room with a wicked, mocking laugh.

She thanked me for sending all the federal agents down to the basement.

She said the massive distraction made it incredibly easy for her to walk out the front doors.

She casually mentioned that she was currently standing in the driveway of Walter's unprotected mansion.
