Chapter 7 - The Hostage

Gael stood triumphantly on the elevated metal catwalk, flanked completely by half a dozen heavily armed cartel mercenaries.
He mocked my desperate, pathetic attempt to play the role of an action hero in a dangerous world I completely failed to understand.
He arrogantly explained that the missing fifty million dollars was merely a down payment required to secure this massive shipment of illegal weaponry.
He had intentionally framed me for the embezzlement to completely distract the federal authorities while the actual smuggling operation took place.
I stared up at my treacherous husband, feeling absolutely no remaining shred of love or sympathy for the monster he had become.
I calmly told him that he was an absolute fool for getting into bed with a violent cartel that would eventually slaughter him.
Gael laughed darkly, claiming that he was entirely in control of the incredibly lucrative partnership and absolutely untouchable.
He commanded his armed guards to march down the metal stairs and secure me tightly to a heavy structural pillar with zip ties.
The rough plastic cut deeply into my wrists as I desperately scanned the massive warehouse for any possible avenue of escape.
Gael descended the stairs slowly, his expensive designer shoes clicking loudly against the cold concrete floor.
He walked directly up to me, his face twisting into an ugly mask of pure, unadulterated hatred and massive insecurity.
He whispered that he had always despised my quiet brilliance and my constant, unspoken assumption that I was smarter than him.
Before I could deliver a witty, biting response, the heavy warehouse doors at the front of the building violently burst open.
A massive, armored black van aggressively crashed through the metal barricades, skidding wildly to a halt in the center of the room.
The back doors of the van flew open, and a heavily armed strike team completely flooded into the vast, echoing warehouse.
I initially thought the federal agents had finally arrived to save me and dismantle the massive smuggling operation.
However, these men were absolutely not wearing official federal windbreakers or carrying legitimate police badges.
They were wearing dark, unmarked tactical gear, and they immediately opened fire on Gael's stunned cartel mercenaries.
The warehouse erupted into absolute, terrifying chaos as thousands of high-caliber bullets shredded the wooden crates around me.
Gael screamed in pure terror, completely abandoning his tough facade as he dove frantically behind a massive forklift for cover.
I struggled fiercely against my tight plastic restraints, desperately trying to free myself before a stray bullet ended my life entirely.
A tall figure dressed in black combat gear sprinted fiercely through the intense crossfire and slid directly toward my pillar.
The figure quickly pulled out a sharp combat knife and swiftly sliced through my tight plastic zip ties with expert precision.

The rescuer pulled off their heavy tactical helmet, shaking out a long cascade of familiar, bright red hair.
It was Monica, Gael's pregnant mistress, staring at me with incredibly cold, highly trained, and deeply calculating eyes.
