Chapter 9 - The Confession on Tape

Kate stood in the rain, aiming her weapon at the three of us with absolute malice.
She told Sarah that Lily was just confused and that I had brainwashed the child to turn them against each other.
Sarah did not believe a single word of her lies anymore.
Sarah slowly reached into the mud and picked up the heavy shotgun she had dropped.
She aimed the barrel directly at Kate's chest, her eyes burning with the fierce protective rage of a mother.
Kate laughed, clearly not believing that Sarah actually had the courage to pull the trigger.
Before anyone could make a fatal move, a barrage of flashing red and blue lights flooded the field.
Detective Miller stepped out of his cruiser with his service weapon drawn, followed by a dozen armed officers.
They had tracked the GPS signal on the burner phone the mysterious lawyer had given me.
Kate immediately dropped her gun and began crying hysterically, attempting to play the innocent victim one last time.
She screamed that I had kidnapped the child and that she had only come here to rescue her family.
But Detective Miller simply shook his head and holstered his weapon.
The back doors of an ambulance opened, and Marcus stepped out, holding a thick white bandage to his ribs.
Marcus reached into his pocket and handed Detective Miller a small, black audio recorder.
"I hid this in the warehouse office months ago because I knew she was crazy," Marcus explained.
Miller pressed play, and Kate's entire villainous monologue echoed loudly across the crime scene.
Her voice clearly detailed the insurance fraud, the burns, and her plan to murder us all.
Kate's fake tears instantly vanished, replaced by a look of absolute, cornered panic.
Two officers grabbed her arms, locked heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists, and dragged her away.

As she was shoved into the back of a police cruiser, Kate screamed a final threat that I would never forget.
"You think this is over, Daniel, but he will never let you get away with this!" she roared.
