Chapter 2 - The Stolen Alibi

The interrogation room smelled like stale coffee and cheap floor wax.

Detective Miller sat across the metal table, staring at me with cold, calculating eyes.

He tossed a manila folder onto the table and leaned back in his squeaky chair.

He told me that Sarah had filed a restraining order against me early this morning.

I stared at him in absolute shock because Sarah and I had been on peaceful terms for two years.

I insisted that I was working a double shift at the warehouse all day.

Miller shook his head and pulled a glossy photograph from the folder.

The picture showed a man wearing my exact gray hoodie walking out of Sarah's house at five o'clock.

I looked closer at the photograph and felt a sudden surge of hope.

I pointed out that the man in the picture was wearing a watch on his right wrist.

I am right handed, and I have always worn my watch on my left wrist.

Miller stared at the photograph, his hardened expression flickering with a hint of doubt.

Before the detective could ask another question, the heavy metal door swung open.

A man in a perfectly tailored suit walked into the room carrying a leather briefcase.

He announced that he was my legal counsel and demanded my immediate release due to a lack of physical evidence.

I asked the man who had hired him, because I certainly could not afford an expensive defense attorney.

The lawyer ignored my question and casually slid a small burner phone across the metal table.

He told me that my anonymous benefactor wanted me to have this immediately.

The screen of the burner phone lit up with a single, terrifying text message.

"Kate knows you have the video, so she is moving the child to the warehouse."
