Chapter 6 - The Bleeding Escape

The horrifying truth paralyzed my entire body for a fraction of a second.
Kate intended to stage a horrific accident that would completely erase Lily from the world.
She raised the pistol again, ready to execute me right there on the warehouse floor.
Suddenly, a massive wooden crate slammed heavily into Kate's back.
Marcus had managed to untie his legs and hurled a wooden pallet directly at her head.
Kate stumbled forward, dropping the pistol as she crashed onto the concrete.
She recovered quickly, pulling a secondary backup weapon from her jacket pocket.
She fired a wild shot that grazed Marcus in the ribs, sending him falling back down.
I knew I could not waste this precious distraction to fight her.
I grabbed Kate's car keys that had fallen out of her coat pocket during the struggle.
I scrambled to my feet, ignoring the agonizing, burning pain in my shattered shoulder.
I sprinted toward the loading dock, leaving Marcus to hold her off as long as he could.
I found Kate's sleek black SUV parked just outside the loading bay doors.
I threw myself into the driver's seat and slammed my bloody hand onto the ignition button.
The powerful engine roared to life, and I tore out of the parking lot at blinding speed.
I navigated the wet, slippery streets with only one good arm, my vision blurring from severe blood loss.
I reached for the GPS screen on the dashboard and quickly typed in the coordinates for the old railway crossing.
The digital map estimated it would take exactly eight minutes to reach the tracks.
I rolled down the window, letting the freezing rain whip my face to keep me from passing out.

Then, I heard a sound that made my blood run completely cold.
It was the deep, blaring horn of a massive freight train echoing through the distant storm.
