Chapter 4 - The Warehouse Trap

The rain poured heavily as I drove my battered truck toward the industrial district.

I parked a block away from my warehouse and grabbed a heavy steel tire iron from behind the seat.

I moved silently through the dark alleyways, my clothes soaked and sticking to my skin.

I found the side delivery door slightly ajar, the lock completely smashed from the outside.

I slipped inside the massive building, gripping the cold steel weapon tightly.

The main floor was pitch black, smelling strongly of engine oil and damp cardboard.

Without warning, blinding industrial floodlights snapped on from the high ceiling.

I shielded my eyes as the sudden light burned my retinas.

When my vision finally cleared, I saw Kate standing on the metal catwalk thirty feet above me.

She was looking down at me with that same, sickeningly confident smile.

In her right hand, she held a small black remote control with a glowing red button.

I yelled at her to tell me where Lily and Sarah were hiding.

Kate laughed, the sound echoing eerily through the cavernous warehouse.

She revealed that she had secretly taken out a five million dollar life insurance policy on Lily months ago.

She explained that my tragic death while resisting arrest for child abuse would tie the narrative together perfectly.

I realized she had planned every single detail to completely destroy my family for a massive payout.

I started walking toward the metal staircase that led up to the catwalk.

Kate smiled wider and pressed the red button on her remote control.

A loud mechanical grinding noise erupted from the opposite end of the building.

I turned around and saw my warehouse manager, Marcus, dangling upside down from an industrial crane.

He was bound with heavy ropes, suspended directly above a massive vat of toxic chemical solvent.

"You have thirty seconds to save your friend before the rope snaps, Daniel," Kate yelled over the noise.
