Chapter 9 - The Truth Revealed

My heart hammered against my ribs as I stared at the badge on the floor.

The men outside might not be real cops, or this intruder might be a corrupt officer working with them.

I couldn't trust anyone.

I yelled through the door that the child was injured and I was unarmed.

I slowly unlocked the deadbolt and pushed the door open.

Three officers had their weapons drawn and pointed directly at my chest.

The grandmother was weeping in the background, pointing a shaking finger at me.

She screamed that I had attacked them and tried to perform surgery on the baby.

One officer stepped forward, commanding me to drop to my knees.

I complied, wincing as my bruised knee hit the floor.

But as I went down, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my smartphone.

I hadn't just been holding a towel earlier.

When the grandmother first started pulling at the dressing, I had hit record on my voice memo app.

I pressed play and held the phone up high.

The crystal-clear audio filled the hallway.

The aunt's voice could be heard explicitly stating they needed to extract the stolen data drive from the baby's incision.

The grandmother's voice followed, threatening to cut the child open if she had to.

The officers slowly lowered their weapons and turned to look at the two women.

The grandmother's fake tears vanished instantly.

She pulled the heavy medical shears from her pocket and lunged wildly toward my niece.
