Chapter 10 - The Last Laugh

The grandmother never even made it halfway across the hall.

My brother emerged from the shadows of the master bedroom and tackled her to the ground.

The medical shears clattered harmlessly against the baseboard.

The officers swarmed both women, quickly placing them in handcuffs.

Paramedics rushed up the stairs moments later.

They carefully took my niece from my arms and gently inspected her bandage.

They confirmed the drive was safely removed and her actual surgical wound was unharmed.

I was treated for a fractured collarbone and received stitches above my eye.

The police discovered a massive embezzlement ring tied to the data drive.

The grandmother and aunt were denied bail.

Hours later, my brother and I sat in a quiet, sunlit hospital room.

My niece was sleeping peacefully in a clean crib, a fresh, undisturbed bandage on her tummy.

My brother hugged me tightly and thanked me for saving her life.

We finally felt safe, knowing the nightmare was completely over.

The conflict was resolved, and our family could finally begin to heal in peace.

Later that evening, I went back to the house to pack some of the baby's clothes.

I found a small, unfamiliar burner phone tucked inside her favorite stuffed bear.

The screen suddenly lit up with an incoming call from an unknown number.

I answered the call, and a chilling voice whispered that we still had what belonged to them.
