Chapter 8 - The Setup

The sirens grew deafening as police cruisers swarmed the front lawn.
The flashing lights painted the bathroom walls in chaotic strobes of red and blue.
I stared at the unconscious man on the floor, my mind racing.
The grandmother and aunt had orchestrated this entire nightmare.
They needed the drive, but they also needed a fall guy.
With my blood-soaked clothes and bruised face, I looked exactly like the violent aggressor they had described.
Heavy fists pounded on the front door downstairs.
Loud voices demanded entry, identifying themselves as law enforcement.
I heard the front door burst open.
The grandmother instantly began sobbing hysterically.
She cried out that a maniac had broken in and was trying to kill her grandchild.
Boot steps pounded up the stairs.
I was trapped in the bathroom with a bleeding face, an injured child, and an unconscious intruder.
My brother was nowhere to be heard.
The police ordered everyone in the hallway to get on the ground.
A moment later, they banged on the bathroom door.
They ordered me to step out with my hands empty.

I looked at the unconscious man on the floor and noticed something slipping out of his jacket pocket.
