Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The living room erupted into absolute chaos at the sound of the approaching sirens.
Victor cursed loudly, grabbing Vanessa by the hair and pulling her toward the hallway.
"You set us up!" he screamed at her, pressing the gun to her temple.
"No, I swear I didn't call them!" Vanessa shrieked, struggling against his grip.
I looked over at Rosa, who gave me a very subtle, proud nod.
When I had helped her up in the foyer, she had used the opportunity to press the hidden panic button under the console table.
Flashing red and blue lights began to illuminate the large windows of the living room.
"We need to get out of here, boss, the place is surrounded," one of the armed men panicked.
Victor realized his extortion plan had completely failed.
He shoved Vanessa hard to the floor and sprinted toward the side door leading to the garage.
His men followed him blindly, desperate to escape the incoming police tactical teams.
Daniel rushed over to me, wrapping his arms around my shoulders to make sure I was unhurt.
We heard the sound of breaking glass and shouting from the garage as the police intercepted the fleeing criminals.
A moment later, five heavily armed police officers burst into our living room with their weapons drawn.
"Nobody move, keep your hands where we can see them!" the lead officer ordered.
We all complied immediately, standing perfectly still in the center of the room.
The police captain walked in behind the tactical team, holstering his weapon as he assessed the situation.
Captain Reynolds was a man I had known for years through my charitable work in the city.
"Margaret, are you alright?" the Captain asked, looking confused by my wet, dirty housekeeper uniform.
"I am fine, Captain, thank you for arriving so quickly," I replied with a sigh of relief.
Vanessa suddenly scrambled up from the floor, fake tears streaming down her face.
She ran toward Captain Reynolds, pointing an accusing finger directly at Daniel.
"Thank God you are here, Captain!" she cried hysterically.
"Daniel hired those armed thugs to break into the house and murder me!"
Daniel's jaw dropped in absolute shock.
"That is a complete lie, they were here to collect her gambling debts!" Daniel protested.
Captain Reynolds frowned, looking between my son and the weeping woman.
Vanessa reached into her pocket and pulled out a stack of printed bank statements.
"Look at these, Captain, Daniel transferred fifty thousand dollars to that gang leader just yesterday," she sobbed.
I stared at the papers, realizing she had forged the wire transfers to frame my son.

Captain Reynolds looked at the documents, his expression turning incredibly grim.
"Daniel Whitmore, turn around and place your hands behind your back," the Captain ordered sternly.
