Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth

The tension in the foyer was suffocating as I stared at the phone in Vanessa’s hand.
I could not see the video from my angle, but Daniel’s terrified reaction was undeniable.
He took a step back, running a trembling hand through his dark hair.
"Vanessa, you cannot show that to anyone," Daniel pleaded softly.
She smiled, twirling the phone effortlessly between her fingers.
"That depends entirely on whether or not we are still getting married this weekend," she replied.
I stepped forward, leaving a trail of dirty water on the pristine marble floor.
"What is on that video, Daniel?" I demanded.
My son looked at me with eyes full of deep, agonizing shame.
Before he could answer, Vanessa turned the screen toward me and pressed play.
The video was grainy, clearly recorded from a hidden camera in a dark office.
It showed Daniel handing a thick briefcase to a man wearing a local politician's lapel pin.
The audio was muffled, but I could clearly hear Daniel talking about securing a zoning permit for our new commercial real estate project.
"It is a textbook felony bribery charge, Margaret," Vanessa explained with a wicked grin.
"If this goes public, your precious son will spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary."
I felt a cold knot form in my stomach as I realized how deeply she had trapped him.
Daniel had always been honest, and I knew there had to be an explanation for what I was seeing.
"That politician was extorting me, Mom," Daniel confessed, his voice breaking.
"He threatened to shut down our charitable foundation if I didn't pay him off."
Vanessa laughed, a sharp sound that echoed off the high ceilings.
"The FBI will not care about your noble intentions, darling," she mocked.
She slipped the phone back into her purse and crossed her arms over her chest.
"So, Margaret, I suggest you go upstairs, take a hot shower, and prepare for the rehearsal dinner."
I stood perfectly still, my mind racing through every possible legal loophole.
I had built an empire from the ground up after my husband died, and I was not going to let this vicious woman destroy it.
"You will not get away with this," I told her quietly.
"I already have," Vanessa countered, walking toward the front door.
Before she could reach the handle, the heavy oak doors burst open from the outside.
Rosa, my loyal house manager, practically fell into the foyer, gasping for breath.
Her uniform was torn, and she looked absolutely terrified.

"Mrs. Whitmore, you need to lock the doors right now!" Rosa screamed.
"There are armed men coming up the driveway, and they are looking for Vanessa."
