Chapter 10 - The Cleansing

"FBI! Drop your weapons!" a booming voice echoed through the thick smoke.

The private security guards didn't even have time to raise their guns before they were tackled to the ground.

Red laser sights cut through the haze, pinning Vanessa and her hired thugs in place.

Daniel grabbed my arm and pulled me down beneath the heavy oak desk to protect me from the crossfire.

When the smoke finally began to clear, I saw dozens of federal agents securing the room.

Captain Reynolds walked through the splintered study doors, accompanied by a senior FBI agent.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa shrieked, coughing violently from the smoke grenades.

"You cannot arrest me, I am legally married to a Whitmore!" she claimed desperately.

The senior FBI agent stepped forward and slapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

"Actually, ma'am, the priest you kidnapped is an undercover federal agent," the man said calmly.

The terrified priest suddenly stood up straight, wiped the sweat from his brow, and pulled a badge from beneath his robes.

Vanessa stared at him in absolute, soul-crushing horror as her entire master plan collapsed into dust.

"I called the FBI the moment I heard the blackmail tape in the foyer this afternoon," I said, standing up from behind the desk.

Daniel looked at me in shock, realizing I had been working behind the scenes the entire time.

I explained that I had immediately forwarded a copy of the hidden recording to my contacts at the federal bureau.

The FBI had been monitoring Vanessa's syndicate for months, and her confession on the tape gave them the exact leverage they needed.

They had used the local police to stage Daniel's arrest to lure Vanessa into a false sense of security.

"As for your bribery video," the FBI agent told Daniel, "the politician you paid off was arrested yesterday for extortion."

"You are considered a victim in that case, Mr. Whitmore, you are entirely cleared."

Daniel let out a massive sigh of relief, wrapping his arms around me in a tight, emotional hug.

Vanessa screamed and cursed as the agents dragged her out of the mansion, destined for a federal prison cell.

By midnight, the house was finally quiet, and the mess of the day was being cleaned away.

Daniel and I sat on the living room sofa, drinking tea and enjoying the profound peace of our reclaimed home.

Rosa walked in, smiling warmly as she handed me a fresh, clean set of my regular clothes.

"I think your days as a housekeeper are officially over, Mrs. Whitmore," Rosa joked lightly.

I laughed, feeling truly happy and safe for the first time in weeks.

I went upstairs to my private bathroom to finally wash the dried mud and dirty water from my skin.

I turned on the sink, splashing warm water onto my face and letting out a relaxed sigh.

When I opened my eyes to reach for a towel, I froze in absolute terror.

Written on the fogged glass of my bathroom mirror, in jagged, hurried letters, was a single terrifying message stating that Victor said hello.
