Chapter 9 - The Siege

Marcus stepped into the concrete room, his face twisted into a mask of pure, murderous rage.
He racked the slide of his pistol, the metallic click echoing loudly against the cold walls.
He told me that my clever little federal distress signal had just cost Eleanor her life.
Before he could pull the trigger, a deafening explosion shattered the reinforced garage doors outside.
The entire warehouse shook violently as flashbang grenades detonated in the main staging area, blinding the syndicate guards.
Marcus cursed loudly, abandoning his plan to execute me as he rushed back into the hallway to defend his territory.
I threw myself under the heavy metal desk, covering my ears as a massive firefight erupted just beyond the steel door.
The rhythmic, terrifying sound of automatic gunfire was punctuated by the tactical shouts of highly trained federal agents breaching the building.
I stayed completely still, knowing that running out into the crossfire would be absolute suicide.
Suddenly, the steel door to my room was violently kicked open again.
I braced myself for a bullet, but it was not Marcus standing in the doorway.
It was Daniel, his expensive suit covered in soot and blood, holding a stolen assault rifle with trembling hands.
He looked completely deranged, his eyes wide with the manic desperation of a cornered animal.
He aimed the heavy rifle directly at my chest, blaming me for the absolute destruction of his perfect, wealthy life.
He screamed that if he was going to prison, he was going to make sure I never saw the outside of this warehouse.
I looked at the pathetic, broken man I had married just days ago, feeling absolutely no fear, only profound disgust.
I told him that pulling that trigger would not change the fact that he was a cowardly, incompetent fraud.
Daniel let out a furious battle cry and tightened his finger on the heavy trigger.
A single, precise gunshot rang out, striking Daniel directly in the right shoulder.
Daniel dropped the rifle and collapsed to the concrete floor, screaming in agonizing pain.
An FBI tactical team swarmed into the room, kicking the weapon away and pinning Daniel to the ground.
A senior agent helped me to my feet, throwing a warm tactical jacket over my shivering shoulders.
He escorted me out of the warehouse, guiding me past the zip-tied bodies of Marcus’s syndicate members.
As we walked out into the cool morning air, I saw Patricia sitting handcuffed in the back of a federal cruiser, weeping hysterically.

The nightmare was finally unraveling, but the senior agent stopped me before I could reach the medical tent.
He looked at me with a grave expression and said, "We have a massive problem regarding the trust funds."
