Chapter 3 - The Secret Passage

I took a deep breath, forcing my racing heart to slow down and my mind to focus.

Panic was exactly what Patricia wanted, and I refused to give her the satisfaction of hearing me scream for help.

I turned away from the locked door and began systematically searching the massive bedroom for an alternative exit.

The heavy windows overlooking the estate gardens were completely sealed with reinforced security glass.

I walked into the adjoining master bathroom, scanning the marble walls and luxury fixtures for any structural weakness.

My eyes landed on a large, decorative brass ventilation grille situated low on the wall near the sunken bathtub.

I grabbed a metal nail file from Patricia's vanity drawer and wedged it fiercely into the corner of the heavy grille.

I pried the metal cover loose with a loud snap, exposing a dark, dusty maintenance shaft.

It was narrow, but I knew I could fit if I forced myself through the tight opening.

I took off the restrictive maid's apron, tossed it onto the marble floor, and crawled into the suffocating darkness of the shaft.

The air was thick with ancient dust, and cobwebs clung to my face as I shimmied forward on my elbows.

I could hear the muffled sounds of the household staff moving in the hallways below me.

After what felt like an eternity of crawling, I reached another metal grille that filtered dim light into the shaft.

I peered through the dusty slats and realized I was looking directly down into Daniel's private study.

Daniel was standing at his desk, furiously packing stacks of cash and financial documents into a leather duffel bag.

A tall, imposing man in a dark suit was standing near the fireplace, watching Daniel with cold, dead eyes.

The stranger told Daniel that his boss was running out of patience and wanted the three million dollars by midnight.

Daniel nervously promised the man that the diamond necklace was already secured as collateral.

I realized with absolute horror that Daniel had not bought the jewelry for a mistress.

He had purchased the diamonds to pay off a violent, underground crime syndicate.

The terrifying stranger warned Daniel that if the payment was late, his beautiful new bride would suffer the consequences.

Daniel did not hesitate or beg for my safety.

He simply nodded and told the man that my life was an acceptable price to pay for his freedom.

I clamped my hand over my mouth to stifle the gasp tearing at my throat.

I pushed the ventilation grille open as silently as possible and slipped out into the empty hallway.

I sprinted toward my own bedroom, desperate to grab my hidden laptop and escape this house of horrors.

I burst through my bedroom door and stopped dead in my tracks.

My entire wardrobe had been emptied, my luggage was gone, and my laptop had been smashed into pieces on the floor.
