Chapter 8 - The Interception

I did not drop the gun immediately, but I lowered the barrel toward the concrete floor.
Dozens of heavily armed federal agents swarmed into the dark warehouse from every single entrance.
Red laser sights danced rapidly across my chest, warning me that any sudden movement would be fatal.
Jack continued to sob pathetically on his knees, completely ignoring the tactical team surrounding us.
A tall man wearing a dark suit and a golden badge walked confidently out of the blinding spotlight.
He signaled for his men to lower their rifles, but they kept their weapons ready.
"I am Special Agent Thomas," the man announced, his voice echoing loudly in the cavernous space.
"We have been tracking your husband's dark web transactions for over six months."
I looked at Thomas, recognizing the tactical precision of his heavily armed team.
"You are not here for his miserable dark web sales," I stated clearly.
"You are here for the fifty million dollars I just stole from the syndicate."
Thomas smiled, a genuine look of professional respect crossing his stern face.
"You are just as sharp as the old files say you are, Ms. Vance," he replied smoothly.
"We need you to transfer that money into federal custody immediately."
I glanced over at the van where my children were still crying softly behind the glass.
Ashley was staring at the federal agents with absolute, unadulterated terror in her eyes.
"I will give you the syndicate's money, but I have a few very strict conditions," I negotiated coldly.
Thomas crossed his arms, clearly amused by my utter lack of fear.
"You are not exactly in a position to negotiate, Megan," he warned gently.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the encrypted drive containing the hospital data.
"I am holding the only decryption key to the entire syndicate's financial network," I reminded him.
"If you arrest me, my dead-man's switch automatically deletes the money and the files."
Thomas sighed heavily, knowing he could not afford to lose the biggest bust of his career.
"Name your terms," he agreed reluctantly.
"First, my children are placed immediately into my sole custody, and we walk out of here tonight completely free," I demanded.
"Done," Thomas nodded without hesitation.
"Second, you arrest Jack and Ashley for kidnapping, fraud, and attempted murder."
Jack screamed loudly, thrashing violently on the ground as two massive agents grabbed his arms and dragged him away.
Ashley simply lowered her head, accepting her terrible fate without a single fight.
"Consider them gone for a very long time," Thomas agreed, waving his men forward to secure the prisoners.
"And your final condition?" Thomas asked, stepping closer to me.
I looked directly into his eyes, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"You give me exactly twenty-four hours of total immunity before you raid the syndicate's headquarters."
Thomas frowned deeply, clearly troubled by my strange request.
"What exactly are you going to do with twenty-four hours, Megan?" he asked suspiciously.
"I am going to finish a conversation I started a long time ago," I replied.
Thomas hesitated for a long moment before finally extending his hand to seal the deal.
I handed him the encrypted drive and transferred the massive funds to his federal account using my phone.
The agents quickly opened the back of the van, and my children rushed directly into my open arms.
I held them tightly against my chest, burying my face in their sweet, familiar hair.
I carried them safely to my gray sedan, buckled them in, and drove far away from the terrible warehouse.
I drove to a secure luxury hotel downtown and rented the penthouse suite under a fake name.
I put my exhausted children to sleep in the massive bed, promising them the bad guys were finally gone.
I stood by the large window overlooking the city, feeling the heavy weight of the night finally lifting off my shoulders.
I had successfully saved my family, destroyed Jack's life, and crushed the syndicate's bank accounts.

I had absolutely won the war.
Then, my secure private cell phone suddenly began to ring.
