Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I watched the live video feed with absolute, terrifying clarity.

Chloe, the beautiful blonde woman from the airport, stopped exactly in front of my heavy hotel door.

She did not draw a weapon or attempt to break the heavy electronic lock.

She simply smiled directly into the security camera above her head, knowing I was watching her every move.

I gently placed my phone down and grabbed the suppressed pistol I had taken from the warehouse.

I walked silently to the door, placing my back firmly against the thick wooden frame.

I raised the gun, fully prepared to shoot her the moment the door swung open.

Instead, she slowly slid a thick manila envelope under the gap at the bottom of the door.

She turned around casually and walked away down the long, empty carpeted hallway.

I waited a full three minutes, listening closely for any sign of a hidden ambush team.

The hallway remained completely silent.

I lowered my weapon and slowly picked up the envelope from the floor.

It was sealed with dark red wax, stamped with an intricate symbol I had not seen in over fifteen years.

My hands shook violently as I broke the heavy seal and pulled out a single sheet of pristine white paper.

I walked back to the small lamp on the desk and read the elegant handwriting illuminated in the dim light.

"My dearest Megan," the letter began smoothly.

"You handled your foolish, greedy husband with exactly the ruthless efficiency I taught you."

"I always knew domestic life would eventually bore my brilliant, beautiful daughter."

I stopped breathing entirely, the air completely vanishing from my lungs.

My father had died in a horrific, fiery car crash when I was twenty years old.

I had personally identified his charred remains in the county morgue before burying him.

I forced my terrified eyes to continue reading the impossible words written on the page.

"Did you honestly believe I would let my greatest creation simply fade away into suburban mediocrity?" the letter asked mockingly.

"I built the syndicate from nothing, and I needed you to return and take your rightful place at my side."

"I paid Jack to marry you, I orchestrated the fake affair, and I ordered Carol to try and kill you."

The entire foundation of my life collapsed instantly into absolute, meaningless dust.

My ten-year marriage was not a failure of love, it was a perfectly executed corporate assignment.

My husband was nothing more than a paid employee keeping a watchful eye on a sleeping monster.

"You proved tonight that your fangs are still sharp and your mind is still completely unbroken," the letter continued.

"You have won your absolute freedom from that pathetic fake family."

"But freedom comes with a very heavy price in our world."

I looked over at my two children sleeping peacefully on the massive hotel bed.

They were the only real, beautiful things I had ever managed to create in my entire life.

I read the final terrifying sentence of the letter, and a single tear traced down my cold cheek.

"Look out your window, sweet girl, and welcome back to the family business."

I dropped the paper onto the desk and walked slowly toward the massive window overlooking the dark city.

I pulled the heavy curtain back just a fraction of an inch to look down at the street below.

Three heavily armored black SUVs were completely blocking the main exit of the hotel parking garage.

Standing in the center of the dark street, illuminated completely by the headlights, was my father.

He looked exactly the same as the day he died, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit and a cruel smile.

He looked up at my window, raised his hand slowly, and gave me a chilling, perfect salute.
