Chapter 1 - The Glass Walkway

I caught my husband lying to me in real time.
He told me he was scrubbing into an emergency surgery.
He promised he would be at the hospital all night saving lives.
The problem was that I was standing above Terminal C at the international airport.
I was watching him laugh with another woman while his entire family prepared to board a flight without me.
Ten years of marriage shattered in a single heartbeat.
My name is Megan Walker, and for ten years I believed I knew the man I married.
I could not have been more wrong.
"Hey, sweetheart," Jack said over the phone, his voice completely calm and comforting.
"I am stuck in an emergency surgery right now."
"It looks like I will be at the hospital until tomorrow morning."
I opened my mouth to tell him to be careful.
Then I looked down through the thick glass walkway.
There he was.
He was less than twenty feet below me.
He was wearing the charcoal-gray sport coat I had given him for our anniversary.
His arm rested comfortably around a beautiful blonde woman as they rolled matching suitcases toward the airline counter.
My heart stopped beating.
"No," I whispered softly to myself.
Then I noticed the rest of them.
His mother, Carol, was standing right there.
His sister, Ashley, was laughing beside her.
My precious children were standing with them.
Every one of them stood nearby holding boarding passes.
They were chatting excitedly like they were about to start the perfect family vacation.
Everyone was going except me.
The loud sounds of the busy airport completely disappeared.
The noise of rolling luggage faded away.
The annoying flight announcements went silent.
This was not some simple misunderstanding.
No one had accidentally forgotten to invite me.
They had planned an entire luxury vacation without me.
"I love you," Jack said smoothly into the phone.
Then he hung up.
A second later, he leaned over and kissed the blonde woman.
He did it right there in front of his family.
No one looked surprised at all.
Carol simply adjusted her expensive sunglasses.
Ashley laughed while snapping pictures of the happy couple.
The children smiled at the camera as if this were a completely normal occurrence.
That hurt even more than the sickening kiss.
They all knew about her.
For years, I had been the one holding that ungrateful family together.
I organized every holiday dinner.
I remembered every single birthday.
I paid their bills before anyone noticed they were dangerously overdue.
I bought all the gifts.
I sent flowers to his mother every Mother's Day.
I smoothed over all of their petty arguments.
I protected their darkest secrets.
While I spent years fixing every crack in Jack's life, they quietly built a version of the family that no longer included me.
Then something inside me permanently changed.
The violent shaking in my hands suddenly stopped.
It was not because I felt better.
It was because I suddenly felt absolutely nothing at all.
There comes a moment when kindness finally runs out.
There is a moment when you realize the people you sacrificed everything for mistake your patience for weakness.
Jack thought I would never fight back.
Carol believed I would always stay quiet to keep the peace.
Ashley assumed I would simply disappear into the background.
The woman standing beside my husband probably believed she was stepping into a beautiful life he had built through his own hard work.
None of them knew who I had been before I became the perfect housewife named Megan Walker.
I did not run downstairs to confront them.
I did not scream like a crazy woman.
I did not make a scene in front of hundreds of strangers.
Instead, I calmly walked to a quiet corner near the arrivals area and unlocked my cell phone.
Buried deep in my encrypted contacts was a number I had not touched in over a decade.
I pressed the call button.
The call connected on the second ring.
"Megan?" the man asked.
His rough voice instantly softened when he heard my breathing.
I glanced through the glass one last time.
Jack was laughing again.
He was completely relaxed and completely certain he was untouchable.
I took one slow, deep breath.
"Gerald," I said clearly.
"Open the sealed file."
There was total silence on the other end of the line.
Then came a very cautious reply.
"Are you talking about everything?" Gerald asked.
Below me, the family gathered closely for another smiling photo.
"Yes," I answered without hesitation.
"Open all of it."
Another heavy pause filled the line.
"Megan, once I do this, there is no putting the genie back in the bottle," he warned me.
"I know," I replied.
I heard rapid keyboard clicks echo through the phone speaker.
Then Gerald quietly said six words that made my pulse race with anticipation.
"The first documents are uploading now."
At that exact moment, Jack pulled out his phone.
His arrogant smile instantly vanished.
The color drained entirely from his face as he stared at his glowing screen.
Whatever he had just received changed everything.
May you like
Jack frantically looked up toward the glass walkway, locking eyes perfectly with me.
I gave him a cold smile, pressed a button on my phone, and all the lights in Terminal C instantly went pitch black.
