Chapter 2 - The Sealed File

The terminal descended into absolute chaos as the emergency backup lights flickered on.

People screamed and rushed blindly toward the nearest exits.

I turned my back on the glass window and walked calmly away.

I blended perfectly into the panicked crowd.

Gerald was still waiting on the secure line.

"The power grid override was a nice touch, Megan," Gerald chuckled softly.

"I needed a head start before he tries to follow me," I explained.

"What exactly did you just send to his phone?" I asked.

"I sent him a notification that his medical license has been suspended pending a federal fraud investigation," Gerald replied.

"I also froze every single bank account associated with his social security number."

I smiled as I pushed through the revolving doors into the cool night air.

"His credit cards will decline at the airline counter," Gerald added.

"They are not getting on that plane tonight."

I walked toward the long-term parking garage where I had left my vehicle.

Before I became a suburban mother, I was the chief financial fixer for an elite corporate syndicate.

I made multi-million dollar problems disappear for very powerful people.

When I met Jack, I chose to walk away from that dark world to build a normal, safe family.

I had buried my past so deeply that Jack honestly believed I was just a boring accountant.

My phone suddenly vibrated violently in my hand.

The caller identification displayed my husband's name.

I ignored the call and let it go directly to voicemail.

He called a second time.

He called a third time in rapid succession.

I unlocked my car and climbed into the driver's seat.

I connected my phone to the dashboard system and played his desperate voicemail.

"Megan, something crazy is happening with my phone and my bank accounts," Jack's recorded voice panicked over the speakers.

"I need you to log into the joint accounts right now and wire money to my secondary card."

"I am still at the hospital, and my wallet was just stolen from my locker."

I laughed out loud at his pathetic, transparent lies.

He was literally begging the wife he was abandoning to fund his romantic getaway.

I opened my laptop on the passenger seat and booted up my custom decryption software.

If Jack was running away with another woman, he had to have a secret communication channel.

I hacked into his encrypted cloud storage within three minutes.

I bypassed his ridiculous two-factor authentication with an old backdoor exploit I wrote years ago.

The screen flooded with hundreds of hidden folders, photographs, and text logs.

I opened a folder labeled with the blonde woman's name.

Her name was Chloe.

The folder contained romantic emails, hotel receipts, and jewelry purchases dating back three entire years.

He had been living a complete double life right under my nose.

But the worst discovery was hiding in a separate, password-protected folder named "The Exit."

I cracked the password and opened the primary document.

It was a completely finalized legal contract.

Jack was not just leaving me for Chloe.

He was transferring all of our marital assets into an offshore shell company registered in his mother's name.

I closed my laptop, my blood running completely cold.

My phone chimed with a new text message.

It was not from Jack.

It was an intercepted message sent from Chloe to Jack's phone.

I read the text message twice just to make sure I was not hallucinating.

"Did the life insurance company confirm the payout timeline yet?" she asked him.

I stared at the glowing screen in the dark garage.

Jack was not just planning to divorce me and steal my money.

He was planning to make sure I did not survive the weekend.
