Chapter 9 - The Standoff

The digital upload bar on my phone screen reached one hundred percent in a matter of seconds.
"The police already have your full confession, Arthur," I announced proudly.
Arthur's smug, arrogant smile completely vanished from his face.
He pulled a heavy black pistol from his designer coat and aimed it squarely at my chest.
"You are incredibly naive if you think local police can touch a man with my wealth," Arthur snarled.
My mother fell to her knees and began begging Arthur for her miserable life.
"I did everything you asked, please do not let them arrest me!" Linda cried out pathetically.
Arthur ignored her entirely and kept his weapon completely focused on me.
"I am going to take my grandson, and I am going to erase this entire pathetic family from existence."
He squeezed the trigger without a single ounce of hesitation.
I dove aggressively toward the floor just as the deafening gunshot rang out in the small bedroom.
The bullet grazed my upper shoulder, tearing through my jacket and burning my skin like hot iron.
I groaned in pain but quickly rolled behind the heavy oak dresser for cover.
Before Arthur could fire a second shot, the wail of dozens of police sirens completely surrounded the neighborhood.
Detective Miller had seen the live stream and brought the entire tactical SWAT unit to the house.
Red and blue lights violently flashed through the bedroom windows, illuminating the gasoline-soaked room.
"Drop your weapons immediately, the house is completely surrounded!" a police megaphone blared from the street.
Arthur's mercenaries realized they were hopelessly outnumbered and instantly dropped their rifles to the floor.
Detective Miller kicked the bedroom door open, aiming his shotgun directly at the corrupt billionaire.
Arthur raised his hands in furious defeat as heavy steel handcuffs were aggressively slapped onto his wrists.
My mother was dragged out of the house sobbing uncontrollably as the police read her Miranda rights.
I stood up, holding my bleeding shoulder, feeling an overwhelming sense of ultimate victory.
The nightmare was finally over, and my family was completely safe.
Detective Miller walked over to me, his face pale and completely devoid of joy.

"Ethan, the hospital just called me on the secure line," the detective whispered grimly.
"Arthur's men bypassed the CPS safe house ten minutes ago, and Noah's heart has completely stopped beating."
