Chapter 1 - The Emergency Room

The doctor looked at me with a mixture of pity and pure rage.

Her words hung in the cold air of the hospital room like a physical weight.

"Call the police," she repeated to the terrified nurse standing by the door.

I felt the blood drain completely from my face.

I asked her what she meant and why my family needed law enforcement.

The doctor stepped closer to me and lowered her voice so the other patients would not hear.

"Your wife's blood work just came back from the rapid toxicology screen."

She paused, taking a deep breath before delivering the devastating news.

"Emily has incredibly high levels of a heavy industrial sedative in her system."

I stared at her in absolute disbelief.

"She was intentionally poisoned, Ethan," the doctor stated firmly.

My mind raced back to my mother and sister sitting casually on my couch.

They had been watching television while my wife was slowly dying in the next room.

The doctor turned her attention to my helpless, crying newborn son.

"Noah's severe fever is the direct result of extreme dehydration and malnutrition."

She explained that his formula had been intentionally diluted with contaminated tap water.

My own mother and sister had deliberately tortured my family for four entire days.

Before I could even process this horrific reality, two uniformed police officers rushed into the emergency room.

I pointed toward the exit and begged them to go to my house immediately.

"My mother and sister are the ones who did this," I yelled frantically.

The older officer grabbed his radio and dispatched a squad car to my home address.

Ten agonizing minutes passed while I held Emily's cold hand.

The officer's radio finally crackled to life with a report from the scene.

"The house is completely empty, and the suspects have fled the area," the dispatcher announced.

Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated violently in my pocket.

It was an automated fraud alert from my primary banking institution.

I opened the text message and felt my heart completely stop.

Someone had just withdrawn every single dollar from my life savings account.
