Chapter 5 - The Wife's Secret

I drove my truck through the chain-link fence of the private airfield without hitting the brakes.
The perimeter alarm wailed loudly into the dark night sky.
I saw a sleek black private jet idling on the empty tarmac.
Two heavily armed mercenaries were standing guard near the boarding stairs.
I rammed the truck directly into their transport van, sending both men diving for cover.
I kicked my door open and fired two incredibly precise shots.
The mercenaries dropped to the tarmac before they could even raise their weapons.
I sprinted up the metal stairs and breached the cabin of the jet.
Harper was sitting in a leather seat, clutching a silver briefcase to her chest.
She screamed in absolute terror when she saw me covered in blood and holding a gun.
She shrank back into her seat and cried that she could explain everything.
I asked her if she was the one who turned off the house alarm.
Tears streamed down her face as she nodded in absolute shame.
She told me she had accumulated a massive gambling debt with a ruthless cartel.
To pay it off, she had stolen a highly classified data drive from one of my old military footlockers.
She said she gave them the house code so they could retrieve it while she hid safely at the motel.
She sobbed that she thought the house was completely empty.
She swore she didn't know Violet had skipped her afternoon classes.
My finger trembled on the trigger as I looked at the woman I had loved for almost two decades.
She had sold our family's safety to save her own skin.
I lowered my weapon, fundamentally unable to shoot the mother of my child.
Suddenly, the cabin door slammed shut and locked behind me.
I spun around to see my former commanding officer, Colonel Vance, standing in the aisle with an assault rifle.
He thanked me for delivering the briefcase with a cold, sinister smile.

He raised a remote detonator and pressed the red button without hesitation.
He told me to see how well I could fly.
