Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I sat in Arthur's private lounge on the ship while staring at the horrifying text message.

Chloe had not just stolen five million dollars and framed me for murder.

She had also forged Ernest's signature as a co-signer on a massive commercial loan before he died.

She had borrowed two million dollars against the value of our family home and defaulted on purpose.

The bank was legally seizing the property by the end of the week.

I felt a fresh wave of absolute exhaustion wash over my body.

I had cleared my name of murder, but Chloe was still actively destroying my legacy from the shadows.

Arthur paced the room and told me we needed to destroy the credibility of that loan document.

He called his legal team and ordered them to subpoena the notary who stamped the original paperwork.

We spent the entire night analyzing the digital copies of the loan contract Mary had photographed.

I noticed a tiny detail hidden in the bottom corner of the signature page.

The date stamped by the corrupt notary was exactly three days after Ernest had been admitted to the hospital.

Ernest had been in a medically induced coma on the exact day he supposedly signed the document.

I pointed this out to Arthur with a massive surge of adrenaline.

Arthur immediately forwarded the hospital records to his legal team in the United States.

The next morning, we received glorious news from the mainland.

The federal judge had reviewed the medical records and officially declared the commercial loan entirely fraudulent.

The bank was forced to immediately halt the foreclosure and release their claim on my house.

The corrupt notary was arrested by federal agents before noon.

I finally felt a genuine sense of peace knowing my home was safe and Austin was sitting in a jail cell.

I decided to celebrate by walking up to the top deck to watch the sunset over the ocean.

I leaned against the railing and let the warm breeze dry my tears of relief.

I had survived the worst betrayal imaginable and reclaimed my absolute independence.

Suddenly, a loud alarm blared across the ship's emergency speaker system.

The captain's voice echoed loudly, ordering all passengers to return to their cabins immediately.

I looked over the edge of the ship and saw three heavily armed maritime police boats surrounding our vessel.

A spotlight hit my face, and a voice over a megaphone demanded that Theresa surrender immediately.
