Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

The local detective looked at me with a mixture of annoyance and confusion.

He reached across the metal table and pulled the thick stack of folded papers from my jacket pocket.

He adjusted his reading glasses and began to scan the first page.

Austin rolled his eyes and told the detective it was probably just my crazy journal entries.

The detective's expression suddenly shifted from boredom to intense shock.

He read the private toxicology report detailing the exact chemical compound found in Ernest's blood.

He then flipped to the printed email chain between Chloe and the black-market supplier.

The detective slowly placed the papers on the table and looked at Austin.

He asked Austin why his wife's email address was directly linked to the purchase of the murder weapon.

Austin's confident posture completely evaporated in a single second.

He stammered and claimed that the documents were obvious forgeries I had created on the cruise ship.

Before the detective could respond, the heavy metal door of the interrogation room swung open.

Arthur walked in flanked by three high-powered American attorneys in expensive suits.

The lead attorney slammed a massive legal binder onto the desk.

He announced that he was representing me and that all charges must be dropped immediately.

He presented stamped bank records proving Chloe had received the stolen five million dollars.

He also handed over airport security footage showing Chloe boarding a private jet to a remote island nation.

The detective looked at the evidence and realized he had arrested the wrong person.

He unclipped the keys from his belt and unlocked my handcuffs.

Austin panicked and lunged toward the door to escape.

Two police officers instantly tackled my son to the floor and pressed his face into the cold tile.

The detective formally placed Austin under arrest as an accessory to premeditated murder.

I stood up and rubbed my bruised wrists while looking down at the boy I had raised.

He begged me to help him and swore that Chloe had forced him to participate.

I told him I was no longer his mother, his emergency lender, or his emotional support system.

I walked out of the police precinct a completely free woman.

Arthur smiled warmly and offered his arm to escort me back to the ship.

But my phone suddenly buzzed with an urgent text message from Mary.

She wrote that the bank was currently foreclosing on my house because of a massive hidden debt.
