Chapter 5 - The Port of Call

I collapsed into the plush velvet chair inside Arthur's suite.
Chloe had managed to secure five million dollars in untraceable funds while pretending to be a struggling young mother.
She had poisoned my husband to trigger the automatic transfer clause.
She had pushed the pet cages onto my rug and treated me like trash while she was already a secret millionaire.
I felt violently sick to my stomach.
Arthur poured me a glass of iced tea and told me to stay focused.
He explained that the brass key in the package belonged to a specific bank vault right here in San Juan.
Ernest must have hidden the physical proof of Chloe's crimes inside that vault.
We left the ship and took a private taxi through the vibrant streets of the city.
We arrived at a highly secure international bank that looked like a concrete fortress.
I presented the brass key and my passport to the manager.
He led us down to the underground vault and left us alone in a private viewing room.
I unlocked the heavy metal box with trembling fingers.
Inside was a thick stack of medical toxicology reports from a private laboratory.
Ernest had secretly tested his own blood before he died.
The reports confirmed the presence of a rare, lethal chemical compound commonly used in industrial manufacturing.
There was also a printed email chain between Chloe and a black-market chemical supplier.
We had all the proof we needed to put her in federal prison for the rest of her life.
I packed the documents into my bag and smiled triumphantly at Arthur.
We walked out of the bank feeling like we had finally won the war.
But as we stepped onto the busy sidewalk, a sleek black SUV screeched to a halt right in front of us.
Four men in tactical uniforms jumped out of the vehicle.
They surrounded us and aggressively ordered us to put our hands in the air.
A familiar figure stepped out from the back seat of the SUV.
May you like
It was Austin, wearing a designer suit and a terribly smug smile.
He looked at me and coldly announced that I was under arrest for the murder of my husband.
