Chapter 9 - The Recital

Friday arrived.

The preschool auditorium was chaotic, filled with proud parents and off-key singing. I sat in the folding chair, my heart pounding as the curtain opened.

Julian sat right beside me, holding my hand so tightly I could feel his pulse.

When our three babies walked out onto the stage in their little bumblebee costumes, Julian completely broke down. The man who had once negotiated billion-dollar deals with a stone face was openly weeping in a tiny Ohio auditorium.

After the show, Leo, Maya, and Sam ran off the stage. But this time, they didn't just run to me.

Leo threw his arms around Julian's neck. "Daddy!"

Julian buried his face in his son's hair, pulling Maya and Sam into his lap, holding them as if they were the most precious things in the universe.

"I'm here," Julian sobbed, kissing their heads. "Daddy's here, and I am never, ever leaving again."

I watched them, feeling the massive, heavy wall of resentment I had carried for two years finally crumble into dust. He had proven it. He didn't just want the title of father; he wanted the beautiful, messy, exhausting reality of it.
