Chapter 4 - The Rainstorm

I was closing up the bakery on a rainy Tuesday evening when I saw the black SUV pull up to the curb.

My heart stopped.

Julian stepped out into the freezing Ohio rain. He wasn't wearing a tailored suit. He wore a simple jacket, his hair soaked, looking entirely stripped of his billionaire armor.

I locked the bakery door and stepped under the awning. "You shouldn't be here, Julian."

"Clara, please," he said, stepping closer. The rain ran down his face, masking the tears in his eyes. "I know I don't have the right. I know I am a coward. But I am begging you. Just let me talk to you."

"Talk?" I let out a bitter, hollow laugh. "You want to talk? Where were you when Maya had a 104-degree fever and I had to carry all three of them to the emergency room in the snow? Where were you when Leo took his first steps? You don't get to walk back in just because you feel guilty."

"I don't just feel guilty," Julian choked out, his voice breaking completely. "I feel dead, Clara. I have been dead since the night I walked away from you. I saw them. I saw our children. And I realized I threw away the only real thing I have ever had."

I looked at him. The arrogant CEO was gone. In his place was a broken man begging for his life.

"Go back to your fiancée, Julian," I said softly, turning away. "We don't need your money. We don't need you."
