Chapter 8 - The Sabotage

Victoria was not a woman who accepted defeat gracefully.

Furious over the broken engagement, she used her connections to launch a hostile takeover of Julian’s company. She leaked stories to the press, claiming Julian had suffered a mental breakdown and abandoned his duties.

Julian’s phone rang constantly with panicked calls from his lawyers and board members in New York.

"You need to come back, Julian," his lead attorney begged over speakerphone while we were in my living room. "If you aren't at the shareholder meeting on Friday, Victoria will execute the hostile takeover. You will lose the company."

Julian looked at the calendar. Friday was the day of the triplets' first preschool recital.

I looked at him. "Julian, you have to go. It's your life's work."

Julian looked at the three toddlers sitting on the rug, covered in finger paint. Then he looked at me.

"My life's work is sitting right here in this room," Julian said. He picked up the phone. "Let her have the company. Tell the board I resign."

He hung up.

I stared at him, absolutely stunned. "You just gave up everything."

"No, Clara," he smiled, tears welling in his eyes as he walked over and pulled me into his arms. "I just got everything back."
