Chapter 9 - The Loyal Guard

The massive, bloody figure standing in the doorway was Mateo.

He looked absolutely terrible; his suit was torn, and a dark, spreading bloodstain covered his side from a gunshot wound.

But his eyes burned with a fierce, unmistakable loyalty.

Elias had confidently claimed Mateo betrayed them, but the head of security was still fiercely fighting for his boss.

Before the four heavily armed mercenaries even realized he was behind them, Mateo raised a heavy shotgun and racked the slide with a terrifying, deafening crack.

The mercenaries spun around in a panic, completely caught in the narrow hallway crossfire.

Mateo did not hesitate for a single second.

He fired two rapid shots in the confined space, instantly neutralizing the two closest threats.

The remaining two mercenaries scrambled for cover, returning wild, inaccurate fire into the hallway.

Cassie didn't freeze.

She remembered the pistol clutched in her trembling hands and aimed directly at the mercenary trying to flank Thiago from the dining room.

She closed her eyes and pulled the trigger, the recoil violently jarring her wrist.

The shot miraculously hit the mercenary in the leg, sending him crashing through a glass display cabinet in a shower of expensive crystal.

Thiago used the chaos to deliver a final, brutal punch to Elias’s jaw, knocking the treacherous CFO completely unconscious on the hardwood floor.

Thiago rolled off him, scooping up his own weapon from the granite counter and taking aim at the last standing mercenary.

Seeing his team decimated, the final hired gun dropped his weapon and immediately raised his hands in absolute surrender.

The massive lodge fell terrifyingly silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of the survivors.

Thiago rushed to Cassie, pulling the gun gently from her shaking hands and pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace.

"You saved my life again," Thiago whispered, kissing the top of her head.

Cassie buried her face in his chest, completely overwhelmed by the adrenaline crash.

Thiago turned and walked quickly toward Mateo, who was leaning heavily against the doorframe, clutching his bleeding side.

"You told him you betrayed me?" Thiago asked, quickly examining the severe wound.

Mateo offered a weak, bloody grin.

"I had to tell the bastard something to get him to stop shooting at me in the driveway," Mateo coughed. "I knew he was arrogant enough to believe it and walk in here monologuing."

Thiago gripped his loyal friend's shoulder firmly. "I'll never forget this, brother."

Thiago tied Elias and the surviving mercenaries tightly with heavy zip ties from the security office.

He used the lodge’s hardline emergency phone to contact the FBI director directly, a man who owed Bellacort Systems a massive debt for logistical support during the pandemic.

Within an hour, heavily armed federal agents swarmed the secluded lodge.

They arrested Elias for corporate terrorism, attempted murder, and conspiracy.

The paramedics rushed Mateo to a secure, private hospital for emergency surgery, assuring Thiago that the loyal guard would fully recover.

As the sun began to rise over the peaceful, forested mountains, the nightmare officially ended.

Thiago stood on the wooden deck of the lodge, watching the federal vehicles drive away down the long, winding dirt road.

Cassie walked out onto the deck, wrapping a thick, warm blanket around her shoulders against the morning chill.

"My dad is still sleeping," Cassie said softly, leaning against the wooden railing beside him. "The doctor said his heart is stable."

Thiago turned to her, the golden morning light catching the platinum in his hair.

"The company is secure, the traitors are in custody, and your father will get the best care in the world," Thiago said, his voice incredibly gentle.

"I don't know how to thank you for everything you've done," Cassie whispered, looking up at the powerful man who had completely changed her life.

Thiago smiled, reaching out and gently pulling her close.

"You already thanked me the night you offered a broke stranger your rent money," Thiago replied, kissing her softly.

It was a perfect, peaceful moment, and Cassie truly believed they had finally won.

Then, Thiago’s secure satellite phone buzzed loudly in his pocket.
