Chapter 1 - The Three Hundred and Eighty Dollar Problem

Cassandra Doyle stared at the nearly full bottle of Brunello di Montalcino sitting on table four.

The arrogant blonde woman in the expensive cream coat had just stormed out of the restaurant, leaving the quiet man in the faded flannel shirt sitting alone with a lap full of ice water.

Cassie had worked at Marino’s Table long enough to know exactly what an open bottle of wine meant.

Once the cork was pulled, the restaurant charged the table.

There was no returning it to the cellar.

Three hundred and eighty dollars.

Cassie looked down at the man wiping the ice water from his jeans with the towel she had given him.

He had not complained.

He had not caused a scene.

He simply sat there, absorbing the humiliation with a strange, heavy dignity that made Cassie’s heart ache.

She thought about her own father, Walter, and how three hundred and eighty dollars could cover almost a full week of his heart medication.

She knew exactly what it felt like to have your entire month derailed by an unexpected bill.

Cassie took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly against her burgundy apron.

She walked back to table four and placed the leather checkbook gently on the table.

Thiago looked up at her, his dark eyes guarded but remarkably calm.

"I’m so sorry," Cassie whispered, keeping her voice low so the surrounding tables wouldn't hear.

"The restaurant policy requires us to charge for opened bottles."

Thiago nodded slowly, reaching for his worn leather wallet.

"I understand. It's not your fault."

He pulled out a faded debit card and placed it on the small tray.

Cassie hesitated.

Her manager, Mr. Marino, was a strict, unforgiving man who counted every penny that came through the doors.

But Cassie simply could not watch this man’s life get ruined by a cruel woman’s final insult.

She quickly snatched the debit card back and shoved it into Thiago's hand.

"Take this back," she hissed quietly.

Thiago frowned, genuine confusion crossing his rugged features.

"Excuse me?"

Cassie looked around frantically to make sure Mr. Marino was not watching from the kitchen.

"I have employee discount credits saved up," Cassie lied, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"I'll cover the wine. Just pay for the food and get out of here before my manager sees."

Thiago stared at her, completely stunned.

This struggling, exhausted waitress was offering to pay nearly four hundred dollars for a complete stranger just to spare him further embarrassment.

He opened his mouth to tell her it was completely unnecessary, that he could easily afford it.

But before he could say a single word, Mr. Marino stormed out of the kitchen, his face red with fury.

He marched directly toward table four and slammed his fist down on the wood.

"Cassandra!" Mr. Marino barked. "I saw that woman leave. If this man cannot pay for the Brunello, you are fired immediately, and I am calling the police."

Thiago’s jaw tightened, his massive hands curling into fists under the table.

He reached into his pocket, preparing to pull out the black American Express card that would end this charade instantly.

But Cassie stepped directly in front of him, physically shielding him from her furious boss.

May you like

"He already paid, Mr. Marino," she lied boldly, pulling a crumpled wad of cash from her own apron pocket.

It was her rent money for the entire month.
