Chapter 3 - The Cold Chain

Cassie froze in absolute terror as the two massive men stood up from the booth.
Mr. Marino scrambled backward, cowardly hiding behind the hostess stand.
Cassie backed toward the glass door, but one of the men moved with terrifying speed, blocking her exit.
"Miss Doyle," the taller man said, his voice surprisingly polite but completely unyielding. "You need to come with us."
Cassie's heart hammered frantically against her ribs.
"Who are you? I don't have any money!" she pleaded, assuming they were debt collectors targeting her father's massive hospital bills.
"We aren't here for money," the man replied. "Our employer wishes to speak with you regarding your actions last night."
Cassie's mind raced.
The only unusual thing she had done last night was pay for a stranger's expensive wine.
Could that quiet man in the flannel shirt be involved with dangerous people?
Before she could scream for help, the men gently but firmly escorted her out of the restaurant and into a waiting black SUV with heavily tinted windows.
They drove through the bustling Manhattan streets in total silence for twenty agonizing minutes.
The SUV finally pulled into a secure underground parking garage beneath a massive, gleaming glass skyscraper in Midtown.
Cassie was led into a private elevator that rocketed upward to the top floor.
The doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, ultra-modern executive suite with panoramic views of the city.
Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk was a man reading a complex financial report.
He was wearing an immaculate, custom-tailored charcoal suit that probably cost more than Cassie's annual salary.
His platinum-white hair was swept back perfectly, and an expensive silver watch gleamed on his wrist.
He slowly lowered the report and looked directly at her with piercing dark eyes.
Cassie gasped, taking a stumbling step backward.
It was him.
The broke, humiliated man from table four.
"You..." Cassie breathed out, her mind completely failing to process the transformation.
Thiago stood up, his towering frame looking even more imposing in the expensive suit.
"Good morning, Cassandra," Thiago said, his deep voice echoing in the quiet office.
"I don't understand," she stammered, looking around the luxurious room. "You were struggling to pay rent."
Thiago walked slowly around the desk, his hands resting casually in his pockets.
"I lied to the woman I was eating dinner with," Thiago admitted without an ounce of shame.
Cassie felt a sudden, hot flare of genuine anger replace her fear.
"You let me pay your nearly four-hundred-dollar bill?" she demanded, her voice raising. "You let me give up my rent money while you own... whatever this is?"
"I couldn't reveal myself without ruining the moment," Thiago said softly.
"The moment?" Cassie yelled. "My landlord is threatening to evict me and my sick father today because of 'the moment'!"
Thiago's expression instantly darkened with genuine concern.
"Your father is Walter Doyle, correct?" Thiago asked.
Cassie froze, a cold chill running down her spine. "How do you know his name?"
Thiago picked up a thick folder from his desk and tossed it gently toward her.
"Because as of an hour ago, Bellacort Medical Cold Chain Systems acquired the private hospital where he is currently receiving treatment."
Cassie stared at the folder in absolute horror.
"Why would you do that?" she whispered.
"Because the board of directors was preparing to deny his experimental heart surgery due to lack of funds," Thiago explained coldly.
"And now?" Cassie asked, trembling.
"Now, the surgery is fully approved and completely paid for," Thiago stated.
Before Cassie could even process the incredible news, the heavy office doors burst open.
A frantic assistant rushed into the room, completely ignoring Cassie.
"Mr. Bellacort!" the assistant yelled. "We have a catastrophic failure at the Brooklyn terminal!"
Thiago turned sharply. "What happened?"
"Someone just intentionally cut the power grid to the main storage facility," the assistant gasped. "The backup generators have been sabotaged."
Thiago’s face drained of all color.
"There are two million doses of temperature-sensitive pediatric vaccines in that warehouse," Thiago growled.
"They have exactly forty-five minutes before they expire and become totally useless," the assistant panicked.
May you like
Thiago rushed toward the door, yelling for his security team, but Cassie suddenly grabbed his arm.
"Wait," Cassie said, her eyes flashing with sudden intensity. "What kind of backup generators do you use?"
