Chapter 6 - The Falling Tower

The deafening explosion ripped through the foundation of the hospital, sending a massive shockwave up through the building.
The floor beneath Cassie’s feet violently buckled, throwing her hard against her father's hospital bed.
Dust and shattered drywall rained down from the ceiling as the emergency alarms wailed into the chaotic night.
Thiago lunged into the room, grabbing Cassie by the waist and pulling her away from the shattering window glass.
"We have to move, right now!" Thiago shouted over the grinding, terrifying sound of twisting steel.
Cassie scrambled to her feet, desperately trying to unhook her father's IV lines and oxygen monitors.
Walter Doyle was groggy and weak, completely unable to walk on his own after his recent heart episodes.
Thiago didn't waste a single second arguing or assessing the damage.
He scooped the frail older man up into his massive, powerful arms as if Walter weighed absolutely nothing.
"Lead the way, Cassandra!" Thiago ordered, his voice cutting through the panic like a knife.
Cassie sprinted out into the hallway, navigating through the panicked medical staff and falling debris.
The elevators were completely dead, the shafts filled with thick, choking black smoke rising from the basement.
They forced their way into the emergency stairwell, the concrete steps already cracked and unstable.
"Keep moving down!" Thiago commanded, his breathing heavy but controlled as he carried her father.
They descended three flights of stairs before hitting a massive, impenetrable wall of collapsed concrete and twisted rebar.
The stairwell below the second floor was completely destroyed, trapping them inside the burning building.
Smoke was quickly filling the narrow space, burning Cassie's eyes and throat.
"We can't go down!" Cassie coughed, backing away from the terrifying drop.
Thiago cursed violently in Spanish, looking desperately around the cramped stairwell.
He spotted a heavy steel maintenance door marked 'Restricted Access' leading back onto the second floor.
He kicked the heavy door open with a brutal display of pure physical strength, shattering the electronic lock.
They stumbled out onto the second floor, which was currently being renovated and was completely abandoned.
The floor was covered in exposed wiring, scaffolding, and heavy construction equipment.
The heat from the fires raging below was intensely terrifying, blistering the paint on the walls.
Thiago carefully laid Walter down on a pile of relatively clean drywall near the massive exterior windows.
He pulled his encrypted radio, shouting for Mateo and his security teams, but the signal was completely jammed.
"They're going to come for us," Thiago promised, looking at Cassie’s terrified, tear-streaked face.
Cassie looked out the shattered windows.
They were trapped on the second floor, nearly thirty feet above the chaotic, debris-filled street below.
Fire trucks were arriving, but the intense flames were preventing the ladders from extending safely to their location.
"We can't wait," Cassie panicked, pointing to the thick black smoke pouring through the hallway doors. "My dad’s heart can't handle this smoke."
Thiago looked around the construction zone, his brilliant, tactical mind racing for a solution.
He noticed a massive, heavy-duty industrial fabric roll used for wrapping the building's exterior scaffolding.
He grabbed the heavy material, dragging it toward the shattered window.
"Help me tie this," Thiago yelled, wrapping one end around a massive, exposed steel support beam.
Cassie understood his crazy plan immediately.
She used her training with industrial textiles to tie a specialized, unbreakable slip-knot around the steel beam, securing the fabric.
Thiago tossed the rest of the heavy fabric roll out the window, creating a makeshift escape slide down to the street level.
He carefully lifted Walter again, securing the older man to his chest using a heavy leather tool belt he found on the floor.
"I'm going first to clear the landing," Thiago shouted over the roar of the fire. "When I whistle, you slide down. Do not hesitate."
Cassie nodded bravely, clutching the edge of the fabric.
Thiago swung out the window, sliding rapidly down the heavy material with Walter safely strapped to him.
He hit the ground hard, rolling to absorb the impact, and immediately whistled loudly.
Cassie took a deep breath, grabbed the fabric, and jumped out the window.
She slid down, the rough material burning her hands, but Thiago caught her firmly before she hit the concrete.
They collapsed against a waiting ambulance, coughing violently but completely alive.
Paramedics rushed forward, taking Walter and loading him into the back of the emergency vehicle.
Thiago pulled Cassie into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face in her smoke-scented hair.
"You are incredible," Thiago whispered against her ear, his heart hammering wildly against hers.
Cassie hugged him back, feeling truly safe for the first time in her chaotic life.
As they pulled away to check on her father, Thiago’s head of security, Mateo, ran up to them through the smoke.
Mateo was covered in soot, his face pale and completely terrified.
"Boss," Mateo gasped, pointing toward the burning hospital. "The bomb squad just found the detonator casing in the basement."
"And?" Thiago demanded, expecting it to be traced back to the Moretti syndicate.
"It wasn't the Moretti family," Mateo whispered in horror. "The bomb was built using our own company's specialized refrigeration chemicals."

Thiago froze, staring at his trusted friend.
"The traitor who tried to kill us is someone inside Bellacort Systems," Mateo confirmed.
