Chapter 8 - The Desperate Ploy

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand foyer, casting long, frantic shadows across the hardwood floor.

Marcus stood up, aggressively smoothing down his ruined cashmere sweater as a false sense of victory washed over him.

"You are going to prison for armed kidnapping, Kesha!" he yelled, pointing a shaking finger at me.

"And once you are locked up, the state will have no choice but to grant me emergency protective custody of my children!"

I looked at him, genuinely marveling at the boundless depths of his stupidity and delusion.

Several police officers burst through the front door, their hands resting cautiously on their holstered weapons.

"Boulder Police Department!" the lead officer shouted, his eyes scanning the chaotic living room.

"We received a frantic 911 call claiming an armed abduction was taking place at this residence!"

Marcus immediately rushed toward the officers, tears streaming down his face as he played the role of the desperate, loving father.

"Officer, thank God you are here!" Marcus cried, grabbing the policeman's arm dramatically.

"That woman is trying to steal my children, and she has armed thugs outside threatening to kill me!"

The officer glared at Vance, who calmly placed his shotgun on the floor and raised his hands in a non-threatening manner.

The lead officer pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs and began walking directly toward me.

"Ma'am, I need you to step away from the children and place your hands behind your back," he ordered strictly.

My children tightened their grip on my legs, but I gently patted their shoulders to keep them calm.

I did not step back, nor did I raise my hands to be handcuffed by a local beat cop.

"Officer, before you make a career-ending mistake, I highly suggest you speak to my legal counsel," I said calmly.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen before handing it directly to the aggressive officer.

He looked annoyed, but he took the phone and brought it to his ear.

"This is Officer Davis, who am I speaking to?" he barked into the receiver.

The room fell completely silent as we watched the officer's facial expression rapidly morph from annoyance to absolute terror.

"Yes, sir," Officer Davis stammered, suddenly standing at rigid attention.

"I understand, Governor. Yes, sir, immediately."

He pulled the phone away from his ear, swallowed hard, and carefully handed it back to me with trembling fingers.

Marcus stopped his fake crying and stared at the officer in utter confusion.

"What are you doing?" Marcus demanded loudly.

"Arrest her! She is kidnapping my babies!"

Officer Davis turned toward Marcus, his expression hardening into one of absolute professional disgust.

"Mr. Reynolds, the Governor of Colorado just informed me that Mrs. Sterling is a highly protected VIP guest of the state," the officer stated clearly.

He then pulled a folded piece of paper from his own tactical vest and held it up for Marcus to see.

"Furthermore, we didn't come here because of your 911 call, Mr. Reynolds," the officer revealed coldly.

"We came here because the FBI just issued a federal warrant for your immediate arrest regarding massive wire fraud and embezzlement."

Marcus gasped, his knees buckling as the absolute reality of his destruction finally crushed him.

Desperation completely took over his shattered mind, and his eyes darted frantically toward the open front door.

Before anyone could react, Marcus lunged forward like a trapped animal, bypassing the officers in a blur of motion.

He grabbed little Olivia by the arm, yanked her forcefully against his chest, and sprinted wildly out into the freezing snow.

"If I am going to prison, I am taking one of them with me!" he screamed into the winter wind.
