Chapter 3 - The Custody Threat

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the living room following Marcus's audacious threat.
My children instinctively pressed closer to my legs, sensing the sudden shift in the man they had just met.
Olivia, my youngest daughter, grabbed my hand tightly and whispered that she wanted to go back to the helicopter.
"You are not taking my children anywhere," I said, my voice dangerously low and steady.
Marcus laughed, a cruel, mocking sound that echoed off the high ceilings of the mansion.
"I am their biological father, Kesha, and the courts heavily favor fathers who want to be involved in their children's lives," he sneered.
He began pacing the room, his confidence returning in a sickening wave of delusion.
"I can give them a stable, two-parent household with Ashley," he bragged, gesturing toward his terrified girlfriend.
Ashley immediately took three large steps away from him, shaking her head vigorously.
"Do not include me in your psychotic delusions, Marcus," Ashley snapped, throwing her designer clutch onto the armchair.
"I am leaving you, and I want absolutely nothing to do with this twisted family."
Marcus looked completely blindsided as Ashley turned on her heel and marched toward the front door.
Before she left, she stopped, turned back to look at me, and gave a small, respectful nod.
"Burn his entire life to the ground, Kesha," Ashley said before walking out into the freezing snow.
The heavy oak door slammed shut, leaving Marcus totally isolated in the center of the room.
"It doesn't matter!" Marcus shouted, his face turning red again as he tried to save face.
"I have the best lawyers in Colorado on retainer, and I will drag you through court until you are bankrupt."
I sighed, pulling a folded legal document from the inside breast pocket of my suit jacket.
"You really should have read those divorce papers you forced me to sign eight years ago," I advised him smoothly.
I tossed the thick stack of papers onto the glass coffee table in front of him.
"You were so eager to abandon me that you signed a blanket termination of all parental rights for any unborn children," I explained.
Marcus stared at the documents, realizing his ironclad threat was nothing but empty air.
"That document is totally legally binding, notarized, and filed with the state of Texas," I continued, enjoying the absolute defeat in his eyes.
"You have zero legal standing, zero rights, and absolutely zero chance of ever taking them away from me."
Patricia let out a loud wail, burying her face in the sofa cushions as the reality of the situation set in.
Marcus fell to his knees, clutching the papers as if hoping the words would magically rewrite themselves.
Just as I turned to usher my children back out into the snow, the heavy mahogany doors of the library swung open.
An older gentleman with striking silver hair and a sharp, tailored suit stepped into the chaotic room.
It was Richard Reynolds, Marcus's father, a man who had supposedly been out of the country on business.
Marcus looked up, tears streaming down his face as he reached out toward his father for support.
"Dad, you have to help me, she is trying to destroy everything!" Marcus pleaded desperately.
Richard did not even glance at his pathetic son.
Instead, the older man walked directly toward me, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his stern face.

"You executed the plan flawlessly, Kesha," Richard said, extending his hand for me to shake.
"Now, let's discuss how we are going to finish stripping him of his remaining assets."
