Chapter 2 - The Price of Silence

The room erupted into absolute chaos the second Patricia's confession hung in the air.
Marcus leaped off the velvet sofa, his face turning an angry, volatile shade of red.
"You paid the clinic to hide my own child from me?" he screamed at his mother, pointing an accusing finger.
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh that instantly silenced his fake outrage.
"Do not act like a victim now, Marcus," I said, stepping between him and my children.
"You left because you didn't want the responsibility, so your mother just bought you the clean slate you begged for."
Patricia covered her face with her hands, sobbing loudly as the rest of the family muttered in shock.
"I was trying to protect your future, Marcus!" Patricia cried out defensively.
"She was a nobody with no money, and you were about to become the vice president of a major tech firm!"
That comment made me smile, a slow, dangerous smile that caused Ashley to take a step back.
"It is funny you mention his brilliant tech career, Patricia," I noted, casually unbuttoning my winter coat to reveal a sharp, tailored business suit.
Ashley’s eyes widened as she finally took a good look at my face, looking past the drama to truly recognize me.
"Wait a minute," Ashley whispered, pulling out her smartphone with shaking hands.
She furiously typed a name into her search engine, her eyes darting between the screen and my face.
"Marcus, do you even know what she does for a living?" Ashley asked, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.
Marcus scowled, desperately trying to regain some shred of masculine authority in front of his relatives.
"She was a junior accountant, Ashley, who cares what she does now?" he spat dismissively.
Ashley turned her phone around to show him a recent Forbes magazine cover featuring my face.
"She is Kesha Sterling, Marcus," Ashley said, her voice shaking with disbelief.
"She is the ruthless venture capitalist who just initiated a hostile takeover of your entire company last week."
Marcus stared at the digital magazine cover, all the blood draining from his face once again.
The smug, arrogant man who had invited me here to mock my poverty suddenly realized I held his entire professional life in the palm of my hand.
"You... you bought Horizon Tech?" he stammered, looking at me as if I were a ghost.
"I bought the debt your incompetent board of directors accumulated, and tomorrow morning, I am firing you," I stated clearly.
Marcus looked around the room, realizing that his family, his girlfriend, and his career were all slipping away in a matter of minutes.
Desperation makes weak men do incredibly dangerous things.
His sadness vanished, replaced by a dark, malicious glare that I had not seen since the day he left me.
"You think you can just come into my mother's house and ruin my life?" Marcus hissed, stepping dangerously close to me.
My private security detail, waiting just outside the front door, shifted visibly in the snow.
"I don't have to ruin your life, Marcus, you did that all by yourself," I replied without blinking.
He looked down at Noah, Ethan, Sophia, and Olivia, a wicked smile spreading across his face.

"You just admitted in front of a dozen witnesses that these are my biological children," Marcus said, his tone turning venomous.
"I am a wealthy man with an established home, and I think it is time I file for full, immediate custody of my kids."
