Chapter 1 - The Confession That Broke the Ice

The engagement ring bounced across the hardwood floor with a sharp, hollow sound.

Every single person in the luxurious living room held their breath as they stared at the four children standing beside me.

Noah, my eldest son by three minutes, stepped forward and tilted his head to look at Marcus.

"Are you the man who made my mommy cry?" he asked in a clear, innocent voice that echoed through the silent room.

Marcus opened and closed his mouth like a suffocating fish, unable to form a single word.

He looked at the little boy whose face was an exact mirror of his own childhood photographs.

Ashley, the beautiful blonde in the red dress, finally found her voice.

"Marcus, please tell me this is some kind of sick, twisted joke," she demanded, her voice trembling with rising hysteria.

He could not even look at her.

Patricia, Marcus's mother, was still staring at the shattered wine glass pooling red liquid at her expensive leather boots.

"Kesha," Patricia whispered, her face as pale as the freshly fallen snow outside the window.

"You look well, Patricia," I replied, my voice smooth, calculated, and utterly devoid of warmth.

I watched Marcus slowly sink onto the edge of the velvet sofa, his legs giving out beneath him.

He had expected me to arrive in a beat-up sedan, wearing thrift-store clothes and a desperate, broken expression.

Instead, I was draped in a custom-tailored designer coat, flanked by four perfectly behaved children, and I had arrived in a private corporate chopper.

"They're... they are really mine?" Marcus finally choked out, his eyes filling with panicked, cowardly tears.

"They belong to me," I corrected him sharply, my gaze pinning him to the spot.

"You lost the right to use that pronoun eight years ago when you walked out the door."

Ashley grabbed Marcus violently by the collar of his expensive cashmere sweater.

"You told me she had an abortion and ran away!" Ashley screamed, dark mascara tears ruining her flawless makeup.

I raised a single eyebrow at that pathetic, predictable lie.

"No, Ashley," I said calmly, making sure everyone in the room heard the truth.

"He just changed his phone number, emptied our joint bank account, and sent a lawyer to force me into signing divorce papers while I was at an ultrasound appointment."

The entire Reynolds family stared at Marcus in absolute, horrified disgust.

But the real shock of the morning was yet to come.

Patricia suddenly stepped forward, her hands shaking violently as she reached out toward the children.

"I... I didn't know there were four of them," Patricia stammered, looking terrified of my reaction.

I froze, my calm facade cracking for the very first time.

Marcus snapped his head toward his mother, his expression twisting into deep confusion.

"What do you mean you didn't know there were four?" Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with panic.

Patricia looked at me with eyes full of dark, hidden guilt that she had harbored for nearly a decade.

"I intercepted the hospital letters after you left, Marcus," she confessed softly, looking at the floor.

"I knew she had a baby, but I paid the clinic director thousands of dollars to destroy the records so you would never find out."
