Chapter 5 - The Chase in the Dark

I slammed my foot on the gas pedal without a second thought.

The rental car lurched forward, tires squealing against the wet asphalt.

Mark jumped into his gray sedan just as our headlights illuminated his license plate.

He peeled out of the parking lot, blowing through a solid red traffic light.

I gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white, refusing to lose him.

Sarah clung to the dashboard, her breathing shallow and panicked.

We weaved through the late-night Chicago traffic, narrowly dodging a delivery truck.

I knew Mark better than anyone, and I knew he was heading for the interstate.

I asked Sarah why Mark would betray his own daughter for a monster like Preston.

Sarah admitted she had overheard Preston blackmailing him a few weeks before the wedding.

Mark had secretly embezzled a massive amount of money from my father’s corporate accounts.

Preston found the paper trail and used it to force Mark into helping him ruin me.

The realization hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

My husband had traded our daughter’s safety to save himself from prison.

We merged onto the highway, the speedometer needle climbing past eighty.

Mark’s car was just two lanes over, swerving erratically to shake us off.

I pushed the engine harder, pulling up right alongside his driver’s side window.

I rolled down my window and screamed at him to pull over.

He looked over at me, his face pale, his eyes wide with sheer terror.

But he wasn't looking at me.

He was looking at something behind my car.

Suddenly, a massive black SUV surged forward from the shadows of the fast lane.

It didn't even tap the brakes as it aggressively swiped the back bumper of Mark’s sedan.

The impact sent Mark’s car spinning violently out of control across the wet pavement.

The sedan slammed into the concrete median barrier with a deafening crunch of metal.

Sparks showered the highway as the car flipped over, finally coming to rest on its roof.

The black SUV didn't stop, disappearing instantly into the night.

I slammed on my brakes, skidding to a halt on the shoulder of the highway.

Smoke began to pour from the crushed hood of Mark’s overturned car.
