Chapter 1 - The Betrayal in Plain Sight

The tiny red light on the security camera blinked like a silent warning in the chaotic ballroom.

I didn’t wait for the hotel security guard to offer me a private viewing room.

I pushed past the catering staff and demanded to see the footage immediately.

My hands were still stained with my daughter’s blood as the guard rewound the tape.

The screen flickered to life, showing the head table just minutes before the accusation.

I watched my brother Preston subtly slide his titanium iPhone off the white linen tablecloth.

He didn't put it in his own pocket.

He passed it backward, under the table, to someone standing directly behind him.

My breath caught in my throat as the camera angle shifted.

The person receiving the phone wasn't a groomsman or a random guest.

It was Mark.

My husband of ten years.

The father of the little girl currently bleeding in the arms of a paramedic outside.

The grainy video showed Mark casually walking over to our table.

He paused right behind Sophie’s chair, pretending to check his watch.

With a swift, practiced motion, he slipped the phone into the pocket of her denim jacket.

He then gave Preston a subtle nod across the room.

My knees nearly gave out as the reality of the betrayal crashed over me.

Mark had stood right next to me while Preston accused our child.

He had stayed completely silent while my brother brought a wooden board down on her head.

I turned around to confront him, but the space behind me was empty.

Mark was gone.

I ran out to the ambulance where the paramedics were bandaging Sophie’s head.

I frantically asked the driver if he had seen a tall man in a dark gray suit.

The driver pointed toward the hotel parking garage.

I sprinted toward the concrete structure, my heels echoing in the damp night air.

I saw Mark’s car idling near the exit ramp, the taillights glowing bright red.

I screamed his name, but the windows were rolled up tight.

As the car sped away into the Chicago night, my own cell phone vibrated in my pocket.

It was a text message from Mark.

May you like

The message contained only three words.

"I had to."
