Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

The metal chair in the interrogation room was bolted to the cold concrete floor.
I had been sitting there for three hours, shivering in my ruined bridesmaid gown.
Detective Miller sat across from me, tapping a yellow pencil against his notepad.
He told me that they had a sworn witness statement claiming I was the one who injured Sophie.
I laughed in disbelief, my voice cracking from exhaustion and fear.
I demanded to know who would tell such a ridiculous and easily disproven lie.
The detective slid a signed affidavit across the metal table.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Mark.
My husband had told the police that I suffered from severe manic episodes.
He claimed I had struck Sophie in a fit of rage and tried to frame Preston out of jealousy.
I frantically explained the truth about the missing phone and the hotel security camera.
I told Detective Miller to just call the Whitmore Hotel and request the ballroom footage.
I promised him that the video would prove Preston was the attacker and Mark was his accomplice.
The detective stopped tapping his pencil and looked at me with a mixture of pity and annoyance.
He explained that officers had already visited the hotel an hour ago.
The hotel management claimed there was a sudden power surge during the reception.
The entire security system had rebooted, and the hard drives had been completely wiped.
All footage from the ballroom was gone.
My heart plummeted as I realized the immense reach of my family’s wealth and influence.
Preston hadn't just bought off my husband.
He had bought the silence of a luxury hotel and erased the only proof of my innocence.
The detective stood up and said I would be transferred to the county jail until my arraignment.
I begged him to let me make one phone call to check on my daughter.
He ignored my pleas and reached for the door handle.
Just as the door clicked open, a smartly dressed woman in a sharp blazer stepped into the room.
She slammed her expensive briefcase onto the table and flashed a brilliant smile.
She introduced herself as my new defense attorney, hired by an anonymous benefactor.
Before the detective could speak, she handed him a small black flash drive.

She looked at me and winked.
"The hotel wiped their servers, but they forgot about the AV company's backup cloud."
