Chapter 2 - The Hush Money

The sterile smell of the emergency room made my stomach turn.

Sophie lay sleeping on the narrow hospital bed, a white bandage wrapped tightly around her forehead.

The doctor said she had a mild concussion and required twelve stitches.

I sat in the plastic chair beside her, still clutching my bloody dress.

The door to the private room swung open without a knock.

My mother walked in, her designer silk dress replaced by an equally expensive cashmere coat.

My father followed closely behind, carrying a sleek leather briefcase.

They didn't look at their injured granddaughter sleeping on the bed.

My mother walked directly to me and handed me a sealed envelope.

She told me that Preston’s wedding had been completely ruined by my dramatic outburst.

She said the family’s reputation was at stake and the rumors had to be stopped immediately.

My father placed his briefcase on the small table and popped the golden latches.

Inside were stacks of hundred-dollar bills, neatly banded together.

He offered me two hundred thousand dollars to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

The document stated that Sophie’s injury was an accident caused by her own clumsy behavior.

It also required me to publicly apologize to Preston for the misunderstanding.

I stared at the money, feeling a sickening rage boil in my veins.

They were trying to buy my silence and rewrite the history of my daughter’s trauma.

I took the crisp legal document from my mother’s manicured hand.

Without breaking eye contact, I ripped the paper into tiny pieces and let fall to the floor.

I told them to take their money and never come near my child again.

My father’s face turned purple with fury as he snapped the briefcase shut.

My mother leaned in close, her voice dripping with venom.

She whispered that I was making a terrible mistake and that I would lose everything.

As they stormed out of the room, two uniformed police officers walked in.

I felt a wave of relief, assuming hotel security had finally called them about the assault.

I stood up and thanked them for coming, ready to give my statement against Preston.

The older officer didn't pull out a notepad.

Instead, he reached for the silver handcuffs on his belt.

He informed me that I was being placed under arrest for felony child endangerment.
