Chapter 2 - The Silent Investigation

Daniel forced himself to remain hidden behind the tree.
If he killed the enforcer right now, he would never find out who had ordered the hit on a child.
He watched in silent agony as the man leaned down and whispered a dark threat to the girl.
The stranger finally turned around, got back into his black sedan, and sped away.
Ethan quickly scrambled to his feet and wrapped his arms around the sobbing girl to comfort her.
Daniel walked back to his parked car, his mind racing with terrifying possibilities.
There was a traitor operating inside the highest ranks of his organization.
As soon as he returned to his fortified headquarters, Daniel summoned his lead intelligence gatherer.
He ordered the hacker to pull every street camera in the plaza and identify the girl.
Within three hours, a manila folder was placed cautiously on Daniel’s mahogany desk.
Daniel opened the file and stared at a photograph of the girl from the park.
Her name was Maya Jenkins.
She was eleven years old, living in a broken-down foster home on the south side.
Daniel flipped to the second page to read about her parents.
He felt the color completely drain from his face.
Maya’s mother was Sarah Jenkins.
Sarah had been Daniel’s most brilliant and trusted forensic accountant for nearly a decade.
Three years ago, Daniel had attended Sarah’s funeral after she supposedly died in a tragic car accident.
If Sarah was dead, Daniel had no idea why his enforcers were suddenly terrorizing her orphaned daughter.

Then, Daniel flipped to the final page of the dossier and found a freshly printed bank statement.
Someone had recently transferred ten million dollars out of Daniel’s offshore accounts using Sarah’s old security clearance.
