Chapter 9 - The Fog of War

The abandoned shipyard was swallowed by a thick, freezing fog rolling off the dark ocean.
Gabriel parked the armored SUV a mile down the road, insisting they approach the warehouse on foot.
Clare walked silently behind him, her wet shoes making no sound against the cracked asphalt.
Towering shipping containers created a steel maze, casting long, terrifying shadows in the moonlight.
Gabriel moved like a phantom, utilizing the darkness to mask his approach.
He signaled for Clare to hide behind a rusted crane while he scouted the perimeter.
Through the fog, Clare saw the massive sliding doors of the main warehouse slightly open.
Inside, harsh halogen work lights illuminated a grim, terrifying scene.
Her sister was tied tightly to a wooden chair in the center of the empty room, looking pale but conscious.
Victor stood next to her, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed mercenaries.
Gabriel appeared silently beside Clare, his eyes locked on the men inside the building.
He outlined a suicidal plan that required perfect timing and absolute ruthlessness.
He would enter through the roof and draw the fire of every single mercenary in the room.
While the bullets were flying, Clare had to sprint into the crossfire, cut her sister free, and run.
Gabriel looked at Clare, his intense gaze demanding her complete focus.
"If you hesitate for even one second, we all die tonight," Gabriel warned her in a harsh whisper.
Clare nodded slowly, her finger tightening around the trigger of her weapon.
Gabriel slipped away into the fog, leaving her alone in the cold, terrifying dark.
