Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Gabriel dropped from the shattered skylight, raining glass and lead down upon the mercenaries.
He moved with terrifying, lethal precision, dropping three armed men before his feet even hit the floor.
Victor shouted furious orders, directing a massive wave of gunfire toward the center of the room.
The deafening roar of automatic weapons echoed through the massive steel structure.
Clare broke from her cover, sprinting through the open warehouse doors with reckless desperation.
She ignored the bullets sparking against the concrete floor and threw herself toward the wooden chair.
She pulled a pocketknife from her coat and frantically slashed at the thick ropes binding her sister's wrists.
Gabriel laid down heavy suppressive fire, forcing Victor and his remaining men to dive behind metal crates.
The final rope snapped, and Clare hauled her weak, shivering sister out of the chair.
They scrambled behind a massive steel pillar just as Gabriel fired a perfectly aimed shot into Victor's chest.
Victor collapsed, his reign of terror instantly ending in a pool of dark blood on the cold floor.
The remaining mercenaries surrendered immediately, dropping their weapons into the silence of the warehouse.
Gabriel walked over to the sisters, his chest heaving, but a rare, genuine smile appearing on his face.
The nightmare was finally over, the thirty thousand dollar debt was paid, and Clare's family was safe.
Clare hugged her sister tightly, burying her face into her shoulder and sobbing tears of absolute relief.
But as she squeezed, she felt a cold, hard metallic object press firmly against her spine.
Her sister did not hug her back, but instead leaned close to Clare's ear.
Her voice was no longer weak, sick, or frightened, but sharp and fully in command.

"You played your part perfectly, little sister," she whispered, cocking the hammer of the gun.
"Now, Gabriel Hayes belongs to us."
